Tabernacle key

Maybe I shouldn’t mention this but as someone who knows his way around quite a few sacristies, I’m sure I could find the tabernacle key in almost every Catholic church within 10-15 seconds. They are not kept secure in any sacristy I’ve ever been in.

I haven’t been in that many sacristies but, if they’re all like mine, I too would find the key in less than a minute.

But maybe it’s because we’ve been around sacristies and things just have a logical location. I’ve noticed that some of our EMHCs have had no idea where to find it on the odd occasion when they’ve been sent to retrieve it at Communion time.

Something I noticed in these posts is the notion of ‘unlocking’ the Tabernacle. Our Tabernacle cannot be closed but unlocked, it can only be locked or open. It’s a cylinder and it has a pocket door. Turning the key in the lock makes the door slide between the walls of the cylinder.

In my parish, it’s easy to tell where it is - there is only one drawer the right size that has a lock on it. Prying the drawer off of the lock would probably take about half an hour, and make a lot of noise, though.

Our would be pretty easy to find. Just reach into the pastor’s pocket. It’s on the same key ring as the key to the rectory and his car keys. Then again, I think he might notice if you were reaching there.,
