I have a question and haven’t been able to find anything about this on other related threads. If I’ve missed something, I would really appreciate it if you can direct me.
My parish does not keep a tabernacle in the main part of the church. I have never seen it. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even know about tabernacles until I joined up at CAF and started reading posts.
I would have to say that this is probably poor catechism… I was baptized only a few years ago as an adult.
This past Sunday, craving to be close to Our Lord, I went to pray in the chapel before mass, thinking surely this must be where the tabernacle is kept. In the chapel there is a row of chairs and kneelers. To the right on a small table along the wall there are the chalices, dishes the host is distributed from (sorry about lack of terminolgy) and the bowl that the alter server holds for the priest to wash his hands with and the purificators. In the front left corner there is a statue of Mary with a kneeler in front of her. Directly in front of the row of kneelers there is a table with a crucifix on it.
Above the crucifix, there is a lock box set into the wall. It is a plain beige metal box with a keyhold in it and the key was in the key hole. There was a dim light next to this mounted to the wall.
My question is if the metal box is the tabernacle?
I guess I had assumed it would be, I don’t know… less utilitarian. I expected to be able to see the host.
It is a very small church and the only place I can think of for the tabernacle to be since it is not displayed in the actual church area in plain view.
I was just hoping to get some insight before I go to my priest and start asking dumb questions.
Thanks for bearing with me.
