Tablet Ignites Debate on Messiah and Resurrection

Interesting, though not as ground-shaking to me as the NY Times would seem to imply. Previously a standard skeptical tact has been to argue that, since the jews made no mention of a messiah-like figure dying and being resurrected after 3 days, clearly the Christians either made that up or were mimicking a non-Christian faith. Now that will be scrapped, and instead it will be argued that the jews made mention of a messiah-like figure dying and being resurrected after 3 days, and clearly the Christians were telling stories to mimic that.

If the tablet is true and it says what they think it does, I’d consider that a boon to the traditional christian view more than anything. :o
 
The scholars in the article sound desperate to me to read into the stone what they want to. “This should shake our basic view of Christianity" - I don’t think so. They aren’t even certain the illegible word means “live”.

As this quote from the article puts it:

Regarding Mr. Knohl’s thesis, Mr. Bar-Asher is also respectful but cautious. “There is one problem,” he said. “In crucial places of the text there is lack of text. I understand Knohl’s tendency to find there keys to the pre-Christian period, but in two to three crucial lines of text there are a lot of missing words.”
 
I wonder if there were as many cranky versions of Judaism about in those times as there are of Christianity today? With their own books, as well.

People place too much emphasis on books in the West. I like to think I’m more results-oriented.
