Does the Catholic Church have a tacit approval for the Wars we are in? It seems to be the case as in the last 9 years I only heard one priest speak against it.

Someone said to me that an Empire always has to be at war and I fear that is the case. Overseas, the USA is regarded as an Empire, though the word is not used here.

Well, how mis informed are you my friend

Pope Jhon Paul the Great condemned the war in Iraq

The current Pope has condemned the drug war going on in Mexico, the masscres in Africa, basically all violence.

The media made a blackout of what the Church said about the war, that’s why few heard about it. In the same way the annual pro-life protests of Roe V Wade in DC (past 40 years) draw tens of thousands and get no press. Another media blackout there.

If the Church was covered as being anti-war, it would give them credibility, and that’s not what the left wants. Credibility = power

So the media covers Cindy Sheehan and Code Pink and other left wing groups who were anti-war. They wanted to give them credibility and power.

The late Holy Father publicly protested the invasion of Iraq in 2003, but priests in the USA do not typically address politics, for better or worse. It doesn’t mean they approve of abortion, either. It just means they are afraid of something, or do not believe their bishop has their back. Pray for priests.

The Church seldom approves of War and usually speaks out against wars that violate the Principles of a Just War set down in writing by St Augustine some 1,500 years ago:

Principles of the Just War
  • A just war can only be waged as a last resort.
  • A war is just only if it is waged by a legitimate authority.
  • A just war can only be fought to redress a wrong suffered.
  • A war can only be just if it is fought with a reasonable chance of success.
  • The ultimate goal of a just war is to re-establish peace.
  • The violence used in the war must be proportional to the injury suffered.
  • The weapons used in war must discriminate between combatants and non-combatants.
Governments rarely, if ever, refrain from war based on the Church’s objection. Once one side starts a war, the other side rightly feels the need to defend itself.

Given reality, there seems to be little point to making constant strong objections that are ignored, damaging the Goodwill needed to gain cooperation on other issues.

That may appear to be tacit approval, but it is not.
