Taco Bell Sinful?

Hi everyone,

I’m a HS senior, and my religion teacher said that it is sinful to eat at Taco Bell because they use some of their funds to support abortions. Now, I understand that’s indirectly supporting abortions which is wrong…but this still worries me so much. I do eat Taco Bell a lot, mainly because it’s cheap and it’s pretty tasty, and I’m so worried now that I’m sinning. And if Taco Bell supports abortions, then so must KFC, Pizza Hut, and the other Yum Brand places. I’m sort of scrupulous to begin with, and now this is making everything worse. I feel like such a bad person. What if there are other places who do this? Can someone please give me an answer. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, Jeanne!

Obviously, we want to do our best to serve the cause of justice in our world, and one way we can do this is by being conscious of who we are dealing with, when we spend our money.

If we know for a fact that a certain company or group of companies is using part of their profits to support and encourage abortions - or child slavery, or their company does not provide safe working conditions for their employees - then we need to find alternatives, if we can.

We can hope and pray that if enough people boycott these companies, they will stop whatever unjust activities they are involved with - and then, of course, you can go ahead and buy their products again.

I was a teenager when it first became clear that so many coffee growers were exploiting their workers, and for a few years, there was no coffee at our house. A lot of people did that, and today, it’s easy to find coffee growers who take good care of their workers - and we can all drink coffee again. It’s a little more expensive, now, because wages are being paid to the workers, but the world is now a better place, because for a few years, a lot of people said, “We won’t buy a product that is made by means of exploiting other human beings.”

Your sacrifice of not purchasing fast-food, along with the sacrifices of your friends, does not mean that you will never be able to eat fast food again - rather, what we can hope and pray will happen, is that fast food places will stop supporting abortion, and eventually, we will all be able to grab a quick snack on the way to school or work, without feeling like we have just contributed to the death of an innocent child.

Don’t worry about the past, at this point, but simply look to the future and do your best to make it a future that is safe and happy for everyone, by supporting companies that do the right thing. You’ll look around yourself at a better world one day, and be glad that you did. 🙂
 
Look…SO MANY places give money to bad things…(you would be forever avoiding…)

One is ordinarily not obliged to “Boycott” such…(of course never go to PP or something like that!) (unless a huge amount of persons boycotted…it would be ineffectual)

Though for your health…which one has a responsibility for …perhaps eat some more salads 🙂

(I am one to talk…I were to meet you there…I would be getting a nice burrito!)

I love Taco Bell. They’re hard to find up here in Canada though.

Don’t let this terrorize your conscience. You’re not supporting abortion. We can’t completely isolate ourselves from this fallen world.
 
Employers pay their employees and then those same employees can spend the money on prostitutes, alcohol to get drink, drugs, pornography, contraceptives, guns to commit murder, etc.

Doesn’t mean employers can’t hire them or pay them. The labor is honest and so is the pay. Likewise with business transactions.

ask this person to prove this company supports abortion
ask this person to prove that the Church teaches we sin mortally when we patronize a company that, not as part of its actual business, but as incidental charitable or other activities may contribute a sum to any agency such as PP that supports abortion.

ask for the proof in writing with proper sources and citations.

ask this person if she pays taxes since taxpayer money does now enable PP to operate and directly funds abortions and questionable contraceptive policies as part of foreign aid. ask her if that is morally licit.

ask your teacher, since it is her duty, to explain to the class the difference between material cooperation with evil and remote cooperation.

Good idea.

I know eating there on occasion is not morally objectionable…but the five layer burrito is “sinfully” good. Yowsa. Very bad for the arteries, but very good for the palate. 🤷

Almost every big company supports something that supports abortions. :mad: 😦 :mad: 😦

So you can’t go around and try and boycott everything. It’s impossible.
 
Honesty, I think this teacher in a way wants to scare us.I don’t think it’s a sin b/c you are not intending to give money to abortions, you are going get a meal. And you don’t have full knowledge either. I know if Yum! would be hardcore pro-choice, the Catholics would have said something.

Here is a short article about this. One of the things I like about it is that they mention that some targetted boycotts have changed the giving patterns of some companies.

Have you ever seen the Pro-Life Boycott List? You would not believe the thousands and thousands of organizations, businesses, banks, sports teams, restaurants, food chains, etc. that make the list. If we boycotted every organization that supported abortion, we would be homeless, naked and starving to death! You have to pick your battles. I have a select group of companies that I boycott because I find their support of abortion (particularly, funding Planned Parenthood) to be over the top and quite obnoxious. That’s who I boycott. The rest, I can’t even keep track of. Waaaay too many!

With this logic, it’s sinful to go to a bank, pay taxes, buy food, and do anything with your money other than keep it to yourself.

So long as you are not directly contributing to sinful activities (eg. going to an abortion clinic and paying for someone’s abortion) or trying to convince someone to spend the money you give them on sinful activities (eg. give money to the Taco Bell cashier and tell him/her to use it to fund an abortion clinic), then you’re fine.

There are two catholic candidates running for Senate that go to the parish I do for Mass. One of them accepted over 20,000 from planned parenthood. He used to be the president of the school board they tell me. His wife is a teacher there still.

We just don’t get it. Fast food boycotts, chain store boycotts, etc have not stopped the waive of abortions in this country. I wonder how many of our women are having abortions right in our midst. Maybe the ones that don’t go to Mass on Sunday?. We should be worrying more about them than Taco Bell. Abortions have to be committed by professed Christians in this country, because most of the population professes Christianity. When we shout from the housetops, we are just driving them away from us. Where are they to turn? I know I would feel condemned if I were in their shoes.

I am not saying that we shouldn’t speak up against abortion, but maybe we are speaking in the wrong way? Isn’t Congress supposed to legislate and not the supreme court? Why are Christians not shouting about that? While it is true that the supreme court intreprets law, this should not stop the pro-life movement from getting legislation through Congress to make abortion a federal crime, right? We should concentrate all our efforts toward getting a law passed and let the Court interpret it all they want. At least lives would be saved in the meantime. Put the pressure on them for a change. Because if abortions are outlawed, only outlaws will have abortions, and we would be saving millions.

No, it’s not sinful. It’s what’s called “remote material cooperation in evil”. Part of your money COULD be used to support abortions, but the percentage of your purchase that supports abortions is so infinitesimal as to be morally insignificant. Don’t worry about committing sin when going to these establishments, but if you can do so, it would be best to eat somewhere else…and especially at a local, family owned and operated restaurant rather than a corporate chain.
 
Wendy’s supports adoption, and frequently has fundraising products to support adoption agencies. Their late founder and CEO, Dave Thomas, was an adopted child, and the cause was always close to his heart.:cool:

Plus, their chili is pretty good, and so are their salads. And I’ll admit to very occasionally having my favorite, which is a bacon double cheeseburger with mustard and pickles only!

I might not be able to research where every product comes from, or whose holdings support what causes. But when I hear about some company that supports something good, I’ll give them my business, and proclaim their positive influence from the rooftops!

Just an alternative to Taco Bell, in case you’re looking for one.👍
