Hi. I just saw my daughters program for the fall and saw this class. Physically this will be good for her because she’s anxious but I immediately thought ok now I have to say a rosary every day for her while she’s in this class. Another part of me wants to send an email to the principal but then i thought “what can I point to? Does the Catechism address this?”
Am I overreacting, I actually believe a calming exercise will do her worlds of good (and I’m serious about doing a daily rosary while she’s in this class as a special intention to protect her”.
Thank you for any guidance you can provide.

Tai Chi is a martial art. I don’t think there are any prohibition for Catholics to practice it.

Yoga might be problematic in the spiritual aspect.

The exercises without the chants should be ok.

I’m going to ask her if they “say anything “ when school starts. Thanks

I would be very surprised if it involved anything beyond simple stretching and movements. It will do her good.

as simple exercise they are fine. tai chi is really hard work because it is so slow. It is a bit like pilates in its muscle formation and effects. yoga is a bit the same.

I had a little bit of yoga in Middle and High school. (Last time was 6/7 years ago.) There was no “feel the energy flow through your chakras in the ocean of your chi” kind of stuff. It was just a way of stretching. We’d learn the pose, what it was called, and hold it. Only once was there a video and while it had “breathe in, breathe out” there was no, like I said, spirituality to it.

I never did Tau Chi in school so I can’t comment on that. But I’m guessing the school would be careful not to get spiritual.

Like everyone else said, yoga in school is nothing more than an exercise in stretching and relaxing. We had a laugh here when the priest tried to use “yoga in school” against the public school to get more kids enrolled at the parish school.

We all knew that all the kids were doing was an exercise in stretching and relaxation before class…

I certainly hope this is the case as far as yoga. I work at a catholic school and I’ve seen workshops promote New Age ideas. I’m hoping it’s as everyone says but who knows. I’ll keep it in prayer. Thank you everyone

Perhaps you can ask for seeing the papers of this classe before, if they exist. And the philosophy the teacher will bring. So, you can discuss this with your daughter. And ask the principal to reapect the catholic caracter of his school, if it is a catholic one.

Something I think: the concept of energy and all world is connected etc is something that is not completly our christian perspective.

And the spirit and body as a whole. And the vision of sexuality and it absence.

That is approximation but some concepts that I have been through in yoga, and that can be impressive for a teenager.

I tried Gen Bu Kai (I think it was called…Fumio Demura?) Karate when I was 50. I liked the quick movements. Tai Chi and Chi Kung far too boring for me. I can handle yoga though. If I can do it as soon as I get home after work befor I eat, it is best. Really helps with Restless legs at night.

I hate restless legs, it’s such a phenomena, I had it before they started making medication for it. I used to get it on my arms at night too. I wonder what truly causes that, whether the nerves and if there’s actually a way to get rid of it or prevent it. Thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut.

Ya, just a few good stretches. Doesn’t even have to be yoga.
