Just recently a friend and I took a retired priest to lunch. He is in
his eighties, but just stopped saying daily mass last year. He
was injured and is pretty much “home bound” in an assisted
living home.
What really hit me was how he kept remarking that the toughest
thing he’s had to indure (he has constant pain) is the loneliness.
So my friend and I decided to take him out to lunch once or twice
a month. Also looking to find another retired priest in the same
situation, especially those that have no family nearby. This
priest was our pastor many years ago and came to this area as
a new priest. His hometown is a small town in Nebraska and
most of his family has died or they are so far away and in bad
health too.
How about searching out some in your area and visiting them?
We’re going to try to take them out, but I’m sure visiting them
would also be welcome.
Oh, he is a diocesan priest, I guess it might not be so lonely
for those that are in an order?
