a house divided can not stand…each and every major christian sect is divided…all of them are in some way or another Catholism east-west…how many different type of Lutheruns ,bapitists, etc…each and every church came from the catholic church, either directly or indirectly kinda by default/cousin if you will…so is it sound then to say that christianity will fall apart due to this division we have allowed to grow within ourselves???i won’t be around for a bit i will be back hopefully

Has Christianity done so yet? Everything undertaken by humans will eventually split in this way. All other Abrahamic religions are similarly divided, and yet they remain. It is the nature of man to become divided along some lines. It is sad to see, of course, and many call for more unity and understanding, but I don’t think anyone needs to worry about the future of Christianity as a whole.

No. If it was going to fall apart due to divisions it would have done so a long time ago. Where Peter is, there is the Church. In Rome, we still have Peter’s successor, even after all these centuries and all these divisions.

Not to worry.

That’s surely a matter of opinion.

Ok, a matter of opinion and also a matter of fact.

Divisions have been pressent within the Christian Church from the very beginnings. we can see these even in the NT.

and yet the Church is still here. Peter’s successors are still here.

Surely 2 thousand years are enough to convince even the most determined worrier.

Can anyone show me in the Scriptures where Peter’s successor is the pope in Rome today? Oh geeze, sorry I forgot, it doesn’t have to be in Scripture or anywhere for that matter for you to claim it as truth. I have to get use to it not being in Scripture or being contrary to Scripture and still true. My bad.

How would it be in Scripture?

What is in Scripture is that Peter was appointed to be the Rock of the Church (Hence the name “Peter” which means Rock - he was not given that name by his parents - they called him Simon - but rather, by Jesus - we see this in Matthew 16:18-19.) We see him being elevated to chief Apostle (shepherd of the Church) in John 21:15-19.

History shows the Succession, though. 🙂

If God had intended Scripture to exhaust His revelation, this would be a reasonable question.

not to worry Sia, you are not the only who cannot see the Truth. there are millions out there just like you.

** I have to get use to it not being in Scripture or being contrary to Scripture and still true. My bad.**

**Great! You’re catching on! 👍

One thing–can you tell me where in the Bible it says that the Bible is the ONLY source of truth?**

You obviously need a lesson in Greek.

Shlom lokh!

Why is that necessary? The Bible doesn’t tell us we need a lesson in Greek. 😛

The name Πέτρος that is given to Simon is the first time the name is ever given to anyone. There must be a reason for that. It’s also the same in Syriac-Aramaic. He is given the name “Keefas” which means rock as well. Why is this a problem?

that was fast it was not my intent for this thread to about whether the papacy was true or not…but for every one to take a step off their respective soapboxes and look at the mess we have all made of something so simple as believing in the true God

What kind of logic is it asking Benedict 16 as the successor of Peter from the scripture? There is none saying that. It also says nothing about somebody born human sometime in the 20th century who later using the nickname SIA and joint the CAF. Based in scriptures, there no such verse ever mention the term of Protestanism, Mormonism, Calvinism, Lutheran, or any other denomation. There is no prophecy of a guy named Martin Luther too.

Thou art Cephas, and upon this Cephas, I will build my Church.

Thou art Rock, and upon this Rock I will build my Church.

Thou art Peter (a man’s name that means “Rock”) and upon this Rock I will build my Church.

Thou art Petros (a man’s name that means “Petra”) and upon this Petra I will build my Church.

If I discern that my baby daughter’s Patron Saint is St. Peter, I don’t call her “Peter,” because “Peter” is a boy’s name. Instead, I call her “Petra” which is a feminine name that means the same thing as “Peter.” Little Petra understands, by the time she is three years old, that “Petra” means the same thing as “Peter,” and that this is how she is named after St. Peter. She understands perfectly that St. Peter is a man, and that she is a girl, and that this is the reason for the slight difference in pronounciation, of the same word.

In the same way, St. Peter (who was being called “Cephas,” at the time) also understood that when St. Matthew was writing down his story, that St. Matthew could not write “Petra” for his name - instead, St. Matthew invented a new word - “Petros” - which signified a male name meaning the same thing as “Petra.”

Little Petra “gets” it - it’s not really all that complicated. 🙂

God is Who He knows Himself to be. ‘I AM.’

It is not at all suprising that the fabric of Christianity has been rent twice.

Orthodoxy - claiming to be the repository of true doctrine.

Reformation Churches - who hold that scripture is the sole authority.
*Sola scriptura, *and all of the later Christian churches formed —> on the basis of this teaching.]

‘It’s a meal of rememberance, as is the Passover meal.’

'No. It is not soley that. The Mass is sacrificial, in nature, as well.
The Mass offers Christ’s sacrifice to the Father, with priest as alter Christus.’

Mass as Passover meal - with the lamb which was slain - the night of the Passover, in Egypt - now become the perfect Victim - Who’s sacrifice is continually offered to His Father.
Mass as ritual meal. Yet the table now an altar. Priest an *alter *Christus. Another Christ.

Christian theology is exquisite. It is, however, based on the notion that man required saving from an inherited, ontological sin. [original sin.] No such thing exists, yet God makes use of this profound error. The Christian Churches have proclaimed monotheism, for 20 centuries.
God writes straight with crooked lines.
