Many of us do this a lot, I’m sure, but I’m going to be taking a break from CAF for the time being. It’s gone from “fun thing I do when I have a spare minute” to “thing that super aggravates me and I’m carrying into the rest of my life,” so it’s time for me to take a break. :o Since I’ve been more active than usual lately, I figured I’d post so the people who might miss me will not worry that perhaps something has happened. It hasn’t!

I am going to set up my notifications so that if you PM me I’ll get an email.

Thanks everybody and have fun!

Awww.

Rest up!

😦

That’s a shame, but I understand.

Yeah, there are a few on here who can make this experience pretty miserable, with the way they deliver information, without any caring, understanding, empathy or any of that.

I felt that way this past week, as well. Some will read from the Catechism, but they will do it in a way that says…at least to me…“Here are the rules…I don’t have this problem…don’t care!” At least, that’s how it sometimes comes across.

It can feel like some look down on others, particularly others with certain problems.

It’ll come across, “Too bad!”

Also, they have these sarcasm icons…see below.

that some users LOVE and just use to death.

The sarcasm and the vicious meanspiritedness of a few members can ruin the entire experience.

Do whatever you need to in order to preserve your sanity.

I understand. I’ve been there myself.

It’s sad since it’s often Catholics against Catholics in a dog-eat-dog type of environment somedays.

Sometimes, some think they need to be right, and there’s just little compassion.

Information can be delivered unapologetically in a way that stings!

I’ve had days I’ve thought, “Why am I on CAF?..Why am I Catholic?!”

Try to find a few real and true friends and just PM them for support, in the meantime.

Just bypass the bad, work with the good.

Oh, there’s also an “ignore” setting. I’ve never used it, but maybe that would also help.

Could someone explain how to use the “ignore” setting, and what it’s for?

Very good ideas.

Pensmama, come on. You and I both know you are taking a break because hockey season has begun. 😃

Taking a break is a good thing. I have done it myself. I hope you will get a rest and come back refreshed and ready to go. We will miss your contributions to the threads in family life. May God bless you and guide you. 🙂

I have an ongoing joke with some of the people in the faculty lounge of the college where I teach, which is: “Are you on your break or on your breakdown?” Sometimes it can feel the same way on CAF, so I understand.

That was really funny about “break or breakdown” but sad that CAF can get that way.

Likewise, I have talked to some who have felt the opposite of support when coming here.

If you’re looking for somebody to talk you out of it let that be me.

There is much to be learned here, maybe just take a pledge not to post or become too involved in the threads.

May God continue to bless you.
🙂

I’ve got class in a bit, but I’d really like to understand what the “ignore” setting is, what it’s for. Does anybody know? I can research it later, but right now, I don’t know that I have the time.

Possibly, it could help, don’t know.

I admin another forum hosted by Freeforums, but I am sure that the ignore function pretty much works the same there as it does here. Basically, adding someone to your ‘Ignore List’ keeps you from seeing their posts. I also think they will not be able to PM you.

Profile > Control Panel > Edit Ignore List, then voila!

Do you mean :dancing:

First things first, take care of you. Above all don’t let it effect your faith. CAF can be crazy. I’ve taken steps back. I still lurk much more than I comment and I actually weigh if I have the bandwidth before I come here. Perhaps keep those tips in mind when you come back to prevent the burnout again. God Bless

I’ve been thinking about quitting just because this place is such a time sink for me. I haven’t had much success with making this a* limited* thing!
(That could be a 😃 or a :o, and probably both…which I suppose is a )

S Shea gave direction on how to get to the ignore list. Then you just type in their name. I think I used to be able to click on a person’s name and have a menu pop up where I could add them to my ignore list right from a thread. I cannot seem to be able to do that anymore, but that might be a browser issue rather than a forum issue. You could try it and see if it works for you.

When someone is on your ignore list, their posts in a thread will be “hidden”. It will still show that they posted, but the text will not be visible. And each of their posts will have a link you can click on to “unhide” their post if you feel the need to see what they are saying.

Most of the users I have added to my ignore list end up banned eventually, so I actually don’t come across too many of their posts. 😛

Pensmama, I understand the need to step away. CAF is a great resource and can be a great place. But there are definitely pitfalls with regards to stewardship of one’s time. I hope the break helps you refocus and get reenergized. 👍

I too have a love/hate relationship with these forums. Sometimes I too am frustrated and sometimes my faith is shaken by some things on here. And sometimes I am frustrated that these forums are not run “My way”
But, I have also been helped by the forums. I can fully understand taking a break. I wish you well and hope you will return!

Thanks! I am trying it out, but I feel better already!

Wow, why didn’t I think to try this before?! 🙂

Thanks for the additional info. I will try this, see if it helps. It might. Thanks again for all your help! 🙂
