Taking care of grandpa

At Christmas Mass my pastor said we need to make the world a good place for babies. Having three kids I agree. Since I am now taking care of my mom, who is 87, I think we need to make sure the world is a good place for the elderly as well.

What I would like to get here is ideas. If your parish has a program to help the elderly please tell me about it. I do not think my parish has an organized program to help the elderly members of our parish.

Some examples:

1. 
   *]Taking the elderly shopping for food.
   *]Taking the elderly to Church.
   *]Helping the elderly with state assistance programs.
   *]Getting the elderly to the doctor.
   *]Inviting the elderly into your home as a family member, especially for holidays.
   
   Or, do you think taking care of the elderly in ways like this is not something the Church should be involved with?

more properly taking care of the elderly is something members of the Church should be concerned with. NB the Church is its members, united with Christ as her head. It is not the hierarchy, priests and religious acting unilaterally. The natural place for care of the elderly, as with children, is within the Catholic family, with recourse to community institutions such as health care when necessary. Institutions staffed and run for the most part by lay people.

Hi puzzleannie, you seem to agree with me. I learned here in Tucson that the Catholic Church is reluctant to have ministries due to the liability involved. I am glad you agree with me. Do you have any specific examples of how your Church ministers to the elderly?
