I was reading Genesis the other and had gotten to the part where Jacob tricks his brother Esau into selling his birth right and then Rebecca steps in and gets Isaac to bless only Jacob, though he wasn’t the firstborn. My first thought was, Jesus Christ, and then are these really Your relatives? I was very frightened by the tone I used and I’ve worried that I took Jesus’ name in vain. I know in my heart that profaning His name wasn’t my intention.

To clarify, I already know the difference is between venial and mortal sin. What I’m asking is if when I used Jesus’ name I had used it without reverence. I’m still very new to reading scripture, so when I read the chapter in Genesis where Jacob tricked his father and brother, my first thought was “Jesus Christ!” followed by “How you related to these people?” That’s the part I’m focused on

You may pray saying oh my God. You should not use the name of the Lord in a frivolous manner like in common expressions.

Are you Scrupulous ?

We cannot take the Lord’s name in vain if we are reading directly from the Psalms.

2146 The second commandment forbids the abuse of God’s name , i.e., every improper use of the names of God, Jesus Christ, but also of the Virgin Mary and all the saints.

If you do you are breaking the second commandment according to the catechism. Mortal sin.

Its what it says. As a catholic you should never say Jesus Christ in vain.

It’s really more so feeling weird about it. In the context of reciting a psalm or prayer with the words, O my God, it feels odd to me because I’m so used to hearing those three words in not a reverential way. My first instinct is to wince and apologize before I realize that I’m supposed to say those words in the context of a prayer.

It sounds, to me, that you were actually recognizing Jesus, when calling His name.

I think profanity is saying His name without recognizing Him and having reverence along with that.

Like the comics will sometimes write: “Geezus!!”
