Catholic language is funny. Traditionally we speak of “saying the Rosay” or a priest will speak of “saying the Mass” This does not mean we are not praying the rosary or the priest is just reciting words. The Church uses language that is very old. The idea of “Taking Holy Communion today” is old style language that has meaning. It is also using the external to describe and leaving unsaid the internal. The Traditional Latin Mass spelled out that what we take on our tongue, we receive in our heart, so there was never horror at the idea of our “taking” Holy Communion.

However, I stand by my statement about the word “take”. “Take” means that we reach and grab for ourselves. You don’t take a present; you receive it. Adam and Eve took the fruit; they reached for it and grabbed it. When we approach the priest, we receive from him the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. We don’t take the host from his hands. Even those who receive CITH don’t reach out and grab. They receive.

First and foremost, thank you to everyone that responded. And yes, you are right, I should care what others think. I use to take/receive communion and not feel the way I do now, so I truly love the fact that I feel His presence. And yes, I should not worry about others think.

As for the difference between take and receive, why honestly even go there. That’s kind of what I mean. The judging, and we shouldn’t judge. Do you think for a moment that I mean the word literally TAKE when I receive communion, no way, it is a gift, it is the understanding and the knowledge of what Christ did and does for us each an everyday. I don’t want to get into a debate, but thats is what makes me worry, oh what will others think, if someone take to heart that use the word take vs receive as something other than just wording, then I don’t know.

The meaning of my post, is that I feel His presence and the peace that it brings to me when I take/rec’v communion. I just wanted to share that. I know in years past I took for granted Communion, without even knowing it. I see it as the knowing that I moving closer to our Lord Jesus, and you know, thats all I really want to do. Is move closer to Him, and as I grow closer to Him, my soul and my mind are at one w/Him.

But you have all showed me something. You know perhaps I should not judge others either, perhaps they too feel as I do, but I just show it more openly.

And yes, I take nothing from Christ, for it is a gift that I receive in my heart, body and more importantly my soul…

Rebecca,
All very well said and summed up !
Take-receive-hand-tongue-kneel-stand… we can find lots to debate.
What really matters, as our dear Pope has said, is what is in your heart when you come for Communion.
Focus on what really matters.
What we really want for everyone is for the Eucharist to effect their heart.
If I read you right Rebecca, I think that is what you are saying…

Yes, you were reading me right. 🙂

And so true, focus on what really matters…

thanks…
