Does the Third Commandment apply to using the name of “God” in swearing, the name “Lord”, or both?

it means what it says, the name of God, Yahweh, the Son, Jesus Christ, and blasphemy agains the Holy Spirit whose name and being are the same. It means swearing false oaths, issuing curses which call upon God to damn someone, taking his perogative, profanity that by definition insults the dignity of God and those made in his image, casual use of the Holy Name as an expletive. That btw is the origin of the Divine Praises, uttered in prayer by Catholics in solemn benediction in reparation for sins against the Name of God. OMG and what it stands for is probably the single most common offense since it has become such a casual usage, even for Christians. The commandment (which Catholics number as the second, since the entire paragraph some lists divide into two, are considered the first commandment) is also the reason observant Jews do not utter the Name, and why Lord, Adonai or another substitute is used in written and spoken scripture. And why Catholics have recently been instructed to respect that in their own music lyrics, writing and speech.

I think that the most heinous breach of the Third Commandment is when war or violence is done supposedly in God’s name.

Yes…“Lord” should be respected…as should all in reference to God.
even by extention covers Our Lady and the Saints…the Sacraments etc…
We must respect the all that is holy…
(but there can be various distinctions made…)

Yes. This would also extend to related concepts, such as any so-called sacre, where instead of using the Lord’s name directly, they use the names of his sacraments.

My 88 year old father says GD a lot in normal conversation. I chided him for it and he got all upset and told me, “God knows how I mean it.” What can you do?
