Before anybody else turns this thread into something it’s not, there is no need to take this off topic for any reason. I know that the pill DOES abort and prevents a fetus from attaching to the uterus; there’s no need to get into it over this.

There is also no need to get into if women didn’t chance to give birth after 40, we wouldn’t have some of our saints from the Bible. We all know that if God gives us a child with Downs Syndrome or any other malady, there is nothing wrong with that.

There is nothing to respond to regarding the accusation of the Church is trying to controll with the last image we’re left with is China’s controlling a woman’s body is good.

There is no reason to derail this thread in reply to anything this poster said because, again, I am not sexual. I don’t even know if I have PCOS yet. My doctor wants me to get a pap smear to diagnose me. IF I have it, we can go from there.

Answer: Birth control pills, or oral contraceptives, contain hormones that suppress ovulation. During ovulation an egg is released from the ovaries, without ovulation there is NO egg to be fertilized and pregnancy CANNOT occur.

Dude, I know women who aren’t on the pill and they practically despise their husbands.

I have PCOS, I know your pain It is perfectly fine to take the combined pill to ease the symptoms (thank Heavens) as you are not intentionally taking the Pill in order to prevent pregnancy. There are lots of other things you can do, like eating well (try and cut out fatty acids and too many carbohydrates) and exercising regularly can help control some of the symptoms, but the Pill will sort out your hormonal imbalance.

Very good advice. A good friend of mine (who is Catholic) also has this condition and she swears by the exact same “formula” that is quoted by Karoline. She is now virtually pain free.

Some women would tell you not to have children over a certain age because you’re breeding like an animal. The fact of the matter is having children is fully human. I’m not breeding like an animal because I’m not giving birth to a piglet or a calf. I’m giving life to a baby child and this is the way that human beings reproduce. Wrong - low dose stops it most of the time but not all the time.

The Church wants control? OK Duh!

Trust your doctor? Give me a break. It is in everyone’s best interest to do some research. It is very easy today.

Try reading the packaging from any of the pill manufacturers. They list that a secondary mechanism of action is indeed making the lining of the uterus inhospitable for implantation. Since we know that many women will have a breakthrough ovulation from time to time we know that the chance is there for this secondary mechanism to work. It is an abortive action to prevent the implantation of an embryo.

Just came back from my new doctor. Family Practitioner. Was going over some issues with her. Thinks I may have Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. Hasn’t yet tested it, I should go to the clinic and get it checked out.

Anyway, she said that should they find anything, they could probably put me on the pill. I cringed. We got to talking and she explained to me that it would not be preventative of a pregnancy but, to treat this issue. …And, if I were ever to get married and pregnant, it would be good to get on the pill to regulate my periods. Basically, getting on birth control would help me get pregnant when I get off it.

I can tell that me not wanting to be on the pill greatly upset her or at least threw a wrench in her thinking because she said, “Why would God allow it to be invented if it wasn’t to help people?” I asked her the same of 8-balls (cocaine).

Anyway, that is right, right? Even if we’re not using it to prevent pregnancy, it’s still a sin, right? Because we’re giving money to those companies and because it’s a treatment but not a diagnosis? A friend of mine’s mother is a nurse and I don’t know if it’s for that reason or because of this woman’s own research but she knows the pill can mess up a body.

What’s the official teaching? …Should I just read On The Theology of the Body again as a refresher?

I don’t know all the teachings of the Church, I’m still just a catechumen, but I have dreadful periods. Suffer really badly. I am a virgin, and single, and my physician recently put me on the pill. Its really helped me. My priest, who is very traditional, knows I am on the pill and gives his consent as its for medical treatment and not contraception.

Most cancer treatments can have sterility as a side effect- but since you don’t go on chemo for the sake of birth control, it isn’t sinful.

I am a British Catholic and according to the National Health Service in Britain which is the public health organisation the pill does indeed prevent a fertilised egg from implanting in the womb aswell as preventing ovulation. This is an abortifacient action in law ie. causes abortion according to our pro-life organisation SPUC. A Catholic should not be taking the pill whilst in a sexual relationship. The Progestogen only pill is more abortifacient than the combined oral contraceptive and according to the NHS does not prevent ovulation and only thickens cervical mucus. The primary action of the Progestogen only pill is to cause abortion. The pro-life organisations should crack down on the contraceptive pill more aswell as other abortifacients which are labelled as only contraception.

Exactly. If PCOS can be treated successfully by birth control pills–if they can significantly help relieve the symptoms–and the Church says it’s all right in those cases, as long as the person taking them is NOT using them for anything else and especially if she isn’t even in any sort of sexual relationship at all, then she should feel no guilt whatsoever in using the treatment.
