Taking the plunge into RCIA

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that I finally got to meet with my priest last week and after talking with him and thinking it over a little I’ve decided I am going to start RCIA next month. So assuming nothing changes my mind between now and then, it looks like I’ll be getting baptized/confirmed at the Easter Vigil (exactly eight months from yesterday).

Thanks for everyone who put up with my questions for the last few months – especially Verbum Caro, who really helped me wrap my head around the Eucharist, and RoseMary, who was always very supportive.

I too am thinking of becoming Catholic next spring 2014. How lovely to hear of someone else from a Protestant background who is planning on making the same change. I hope we can exchange thoughts and feelings along the way.

Sounds good. Do you know when your RCIA classes start? I still have to call the coordinator here to figure it out…
 
Hi, there, again, QuasiCatholic.
It’s Janseeker. Just wanted to say that in terms of lessons of instruction, I’ve done everything except the materials for Lent and then the lessons that follow enrollment as a Roman Catholic. I am the only adult up here who is planning on becoming RC in spring 2014, so my experience will be different than yours if you are in a place with a large population. Still, as you move through the initial lessons, if you want a friend from a Protestant background to chat with, please just write.
For me, attending Mass (the Eucharist) is perhaps the biggest draw. I love the format; I love the individual space for attention and contemplation that is created and at the same time, I love the emphasis on the collective, the body of the believers together as a group all saying the same words and doing the same things within the Mass. There is a discipline there that really focuses Spirit for me (and likely for many others as well).
As to the adult study materials, so far I’ve only hit one matter that I need to keep mulling over in my heart and mind and soul. I’m not worrying it (that’s not my style). I’ll simply keep gently looking at it and see where I land in the spring.

This is pretty cool. I’m a returned cradle Catholic, and let me tell you!, RCIA is MUCH more informative than the old CCD classes I had as a boy.

I think your experience will be like many of these kinds of group learning things. It depends on the size of the group, the people in the group, and the priest or deacon leading the thing.

I sat through the RCIA class for my wife and had a GREAT time; we had a fun crew and I learned a lot that was good to learn.

A year or so after that, I started sitting in on another one, and the fun element wasn’t so much there.

My suggestion is to take along snacks and drinks; lightens things up----talking theological topics after a long work day can be tough.
