Over the centuries we have seen some of the greatest geniuses in history. Albert Einstein as a physicist, Michael Jordan as a basketball player, Mozart as a musician, Michelangelo as an artist, Michael Phelps as a swimmer. We all know these great geniuses, but the question is are talents “God-given”?

Over the past few weeks (I am a Catholic), I have thought about this over and over. Americans seem to have good knowledge of music, but if they go deaf, will they ever again enjoy music? Will Mexicans enjoy their knowledge of art if they go blind? Think about this - God gave us at birth to see through our eyes, listen through our ears, and so on. If so, talents must be linked, therefore it is, hopefully, “God-given” talent. Now, we are not talking about “gift of tongue”, “leadership”, blah blah blah you get the point.

Well, when God creates a person, He creates the whole package. The “talents” are there. However, He does not not create them fully formed. The great geniues worked very hard, harder than most of us care to work, to develop their talents.

I have a 5 year old grandaughter who is very talented musically. However, not much is going to come out of that unless she is given the proper training and discipline and has the desire to work long and hard to develop it to it’s fullest. God gave her a gift, she has to open the package. That is how I see it.

Thanks for the reply. God has given us all talents, and at the same time making us all not infinite but equal. Good luck to your granddaughter on her musical talent!

In Christ,
