How do most mainstream peaceful Muslims view the Taliban? As violent extremists misinterpreting the Quran or as faithful Muslims trying to maintain their Islamic faith and prevent corruption from outside sources? (This story appeared in the London Times and was reported on Fox News.)
Taliban Threatens to Blow Up Girls’ Schools, Shoot Children if Schools Stay Open
Friday, December 26, 2008

Taliban militants are threatening to blow up all girls’ schools in the war-ravaged Swat district of Afghanistan, promising to attack schoolgirls if the buildings are not shut down within a month.
In an announcement made in mosques and broadcast on radio, the militant group set a deadline of January 15 for its order to be obeyed. It also told women not to set foot outside their homes without being fully covered.
“Female education is against Islamic teachings and spreads vulgarity in society,” Shah Dauran, leader of a group that has established control over a large part of Swat district in the North West Frontier Province, declared this week.
Teachers said that they had little choice but to comply. The Taliban have destroyed more than 125 girls’ schools in the area in the past year. Swat, once a relatively liberal area and a popular tourist destination, has in the past few years become a heartland for Pakistan’s Islamic militancy, which fashions itself on the conservative Taliban movement in Afghanistan.
The militants have also prohibited immunization for children against polio – claiming that a U.N.-sponsored vaccination drive is aimed at causing sexual impotence – causing a sharp rise in cases of the disease.

Taliban Threatens to Blow Up Girls’ Schools
the first verse came to Prophet Muhammed (p) was ’ Read’ . It’s a must for all Muslims to gain knowledge , specially about religion.

There were many women scholars during the time of Muhammed (p). His wife Aisha (p) narrated the most hadith among women & she is ( most probably ) the third among men & women who described the most hadith .

There is no bar in Islam against girls going to school. Yes , Muslims must avoid co-education system as a precaution ( lower gazes & guard modesty ) . Not sure if Talibans are against co-ed system or oridanary girls schools.

I’m not sure, but I found another article that seems to indicate that they have a problem with any female education at all.: (This was from ZeeNews.com - not sure if that’s a reliable source. ??)
“You have untill January 15 to stop sending girls to schools after which we will blow up the schools,” Shah Dauran, a deputy of Maulana Fazlullah, the Taliban commander in Swat, held out the ultimatum on the militants’ clandestine run FM radio channel.
**Girls can no longer be enrolled by government or private educational institutions, he dictated. **
Dauran threatened to blow up all schools that violated the ban and said schools providing education to girls would be forced to close. Any person violating the ban will face harsh action, he said.
Prior to issuing this dictum, Taliban in several towns and villages of Swat had either barred girls from attending schools or directed teachers to ensure that they came to schools in burqas.
As an aside, I never understood this thinking. Women could not go to school to become doctors, but women also could not be seen by men who are not relatives. So, if a woman does not have a male relative who is a doctor she would get no medical care. Seems really silly to me. 🤷 )

In any event, if the Taliban is discouraging any female education and this is NOT in the Quran, then they are just extremists. But, that then begs the question: Where are they getting this view from?

… But, that then begs the question: Where are they getting this view from?
…and what if anything is the wider muslim councils doing about this? Is there any dialogue happening between the leaders of the Taliban and Muslim religious leaders worldwide to correct them?

As was mentioned earlier, I’m also not aware of a general rising up against atrocities committed by muslim extremists, by muslims. Are they just not being reported, or do they just not happen?

They should be outraged that fellow Muslims would do such a thing. But they are not. At most you will hear a little wimper from them or they will make a statement like Muslim Woman did. If I was a Muslim I would say, “Hey! What you are doing is WRONG!! Islam is a peaceful religion and does not tolerate violence.! You are at risk of going to HELL and burning forever!!”. But they don’t. It appears that they actually approve of such actions by their lack of outrage.

They will correct us christians and say that we have a wrong view of Islam. Why are they so AFRAID to rebuke and challange their own people? They say that is not Islam, but they won’t correct thier own.😦

I’ve been wondering if it has anything to do with the concept of fard kafayah.
Fard Kifayah:
an imperative duty which is carried out by some people in a locality absolves all others of their responsibility, but if carried out by none, involves the whole population in sin.
Jihad, for example, is supposedly fard kifayah. So I think some Muslims may not say anything, because as long as one of them is doing it somewhere, that absolves them of any responsibility for having to do it themselves. If no one does it, then the whole population is in sin.

Not sure, though. I’ve got questions about these concepts pending in another thread. I’m still waiting for answers.

Interesting concept. But one lone voice in the wilderness would not give the Tailban the impression they do not have a world wide support of the Muslim/Islamic peoples.

I think it is ridiculous. If you see injustice it is your responsibility to act, you don’t wait for others to do it for you.

I thought they meant it the other way. Jihad fighting is fard kafayah. They are supposed to be fighting the unbelievers and establishing Islamic rule. As long as someone is fighting the unbelievers (i.e. suicide bombers/torturing apostates) then all the other Muslims who don’t completely agree with the concept of jihad as quoted in the Quran don’t have to fight and won’t be considered to be in sin. They may not agree with all this aggression, but if it is in the Quran then they cannot disagree with it. So they don’t denounce the violent ones because it keeps them from having to do anything themselves. If that makes any sense. Like I said, I’m waiting for a Muslim response in the other thread to that whole concept.

Sadly a lot is going on. I get a news letter that is dedicated to reporting the little know muslim hate actions that are going on every day. I have verified a few stories independently. If you want the link P.M. me. It may take me till mid week to get back with you on it though.

there is no verse in Quran or no hadith is there to say to close down girl’s school . How Taliban’s closing down school is related to Fard Kafayah or Jihad ???

as faithful Muslims trying to maintain their Islamic faith and prevent corruption from outside sources

That is the view of most Saudis here, and that’s why they love them and give them aids and Zakat.

No, my comments about fard kafayah were related to why there is no outcry from the peaceful Muslims. I don’t know what other aspects this concept applies to in Islam. ??? I still would like to know: if there is no verse in Quran or hadith about closing down girls’ schools, why are the Taliban trying to do this? What are they using as their justification?

Really?!? After posting this and reading some more, I got the impression that no one liked them and they are violent extremists. (I must say, that is what I like about these forums - being able to “talk” to people from other countries who have a different perspective from seeing these things firsthand.) Thank you for your response.

Taliban Divided on Girls Education

… bigger Taliban groups reject the TTS warning.

“We have nothing to do with their (TTS) announcement,” Hakim Mehsud, a spokesman for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the most powerful Taliban group in south and north Waziristan, told IOL.

“It has never been our policy to burn the schools or stop males or females from acquiring education.”

The TTP, a conglomerate of different pro-Taliban groups in the tribal area, said it believes girls have equal rights to acquire education.

“Religious education is equally important but you cannot rule out the importance of vocational and conventional education,” Mehsud said.

"We trust in the saying of Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) that education is must for every Muslim male and female.

"Therefore, being follower of Prophet Muhammad (p) , we are duty-bound to inculcate our daughters and sisters with education.

“I am surprised that on what basis they (TTS) have issued such a crude warning,” he said.

Mullah Nazir’s group of Taliban, which controls Wana, the capital of south Waziristan, also brushes aside the TTS warning.

“We totally reject this warning. It has nothing to do with Taliban,” spokesman Suliman Waziri told IOL.

“Some disgruntled elements are using such tactics to malign Taliban. We have never been involved in burning of schools, and will never do that in future.”

…Mir said the TTS threat will be used by the Western media to further tarnish the image of Islam.

 Really

These extremists in the name of Islam, have banned girls from receiving an education, and the unspecified threat to them and their families is death.

Fact.

Now, I look forward to you linking the articles from Islamonline showing ‘‘real’’ Islamists throwing these Taliban extremists in Jail, or better still, forcing them to build girl only schools across the whole region.

Until that happens, the vacant words of condemnation have no credibility whatsoever.

Relevant enough discussion, but shouldn’t this be in the “In the news”-forum?

if this is how the saudis view the talibans, i’d say this must be true with the others. it’s still vivid in my mind how the general muslim population around the world were jumping in triumph and joy when obl pulled the 9/11 and 3,000 innocent lives evaporated from the face of the earth. muslims interpret their quoran as to say violence and the sword are justified specifically against non-muslims and muslims who’d disobey. by their action they become gods themselves ready to execute their will. peace:confused:
God bless.
