Talking about the wedding night

A bit of side advice, don’t make so many plans that you feel pressured. We were so exhausted after our wedding that we wanted food and and sleep.
Yes. By the time it’s done, you’ll be exhausted.

You could always do what my grandparents did: Got married, had the reception, then he went home to his apartment and she went home to her mother’s house. 🙃

Oh, gosh that’s funny for this day and age!

Everyone is different just as every wedding is different. My husband and I had an early afternoon wedding and by the time the reception and food and champagne were winding down, we were wiped out. We went to our hotel room, he carried me over the threshold and then we took a nap! Refreshed from our nap we began our married life!

Also, the first time any couple comes together it is usually awkward. This is a different way to KNOW someone from any other activity. Humor can be your best friend here!

That was life in 1930. He was 34, she was 27.
Coincidentally–and not to derail–my wife and I got married while we were living in different cities and didn’t officially “shack-up” until eight months after our wedding.

Very similar to our wedding 🙂 only two witnesses, afternoon chapel wedding, photos, meal, back to hotel. Called our parents. Some time passed 😉 had a nap, then out for drinks with our witnesses until about midnight. Tiny wedding part due to finances and part due to the fact we couldn’t choose who to leave out and who to invite

Regarding consummating on your wedding night: I would recommend that you not build it up into too big of a deal. Just see how you feel. It may very well be that one or the other of you, or even both of you, are so tired at the end of a long wedding day with ceremony, photos, and socializing/ reception/ dancing etc that it is not the ideal moment for romance.
I agree.

On my wedding day, my wife was so physically & emotionally exhausted after it was over, she was not ready to engage in the marital act. So we didn’t consummate until the next day.

I think your future husband is right to not plan on consummating until the following morning. That way, there is no pressure. But if things lead to you consummating that night, great. But don’t place an expectation on yourselves.

You don’t want to be drunk/buzzed or physically and/or emotionally exhausted for your first time as husband & wife.

God bless and congrats on your upcoming marriage!

If my mom had her way, I would have had a wedding with over 250 guests. My father had recently had a heart attack and the doctor insisted that we should keep it small and less stressful. So, we 50 people which were mostly immediate family, old family friends and 3 of my friends that weren’t part of the wedding party already. 3! Thanks, mom! 😂

As it was, I had two bridal showers…one mostly family, the other mostly my parents friends and mine. I did get a ton of gifts so, yay me!

Actually 50 guests really was a nice number. Small enough to feel intimate and large enough to feel celebratory. Both my parents had a very large circle of friends and dads family was quite large. To this day I still learn about a second aunt or third cousin that I’ve never heard of!

Flagged. That’s disgusting and disrespectful to the Catholic religion.
Many couples wait till marriage. It’s what the Church teaches we should do. And if she somehow didn’t, it’s her business, and also her wedding night is still very special.

Why would someone calling himself Catholic on his profile say such a rude, disgusting thing?

My fiancé and I were texting back and forth today about our upcoming wedding night. In the past he expressed interest in postponing our consumption until the next morning. I on the other hand wanted to consummate that evening after the wedding. Anyway, we were texting back and forth and kinda figuring out how we wanted the evening to go, just so that when the night happened, we would be on the same page. Nothing graphic was discussed. Just if we would engage in the marital act or not.
Both of you need to chill out and let things unfold. Don’t have expectations either way. You might be very tired at the end of the day of your wedding, you might now. You might sleep late, you might not. Don’t worry about it, you have your whole lifetime together.
During this conversation and anticipating being with my future husband in this way caused some mild arousal. Because of this slight arousal and the thoughts it produced, it started to worry me that I perhaps slipped into sin by engaging in this conversation. I tried to avoid and reject feelings of arousal when they came, but I still can’t help but feel a little guilty for thinking and feeling this way. Have I sinned?
This sounds rather scrupulous. Please talk to your priest.

Since the question mentioned nothing about either of their previous experiences, that is some major and inappropriate assuming you’re doing there. And rude, too!

It’s not a matter of “never sinned”. I wasn’t a virgin on my wedding night. It was still a special night for me and my husband. We wanted it to go right. And your comment is still grossly inappropriate. I have flagged your second comment too and I will continue to flag any more discussion of this inappropriate and rude remark by you.

Ok, I don’t know where you’re from but if weddings where you are are anything like here in the UK then alcohol will most likely mean that you might be waiting a couple of days.

To be honest Kyrie this does sound a bit like scrupulous thinking. I am exactly the same. As I said I don’t think this is sin as you didn’t deliberately nurture these thoughts - but it’s probably better to ask a priest for guidance rather than us on this board. Hope that makes sense!

There appears to be no reason to think you sinned at all. You should be excited about your wedding night, and just being with your future husband in general. It is ok and natural to be aroused by your spouse (and soon to be spouse)

She’s not having guilt. She’s concerned because she felt aroused and isn’t married yet. It’s either scrupulosity (which should be discussed with a priest) or possibly wedding nerves.

I see no reluctance to engage in the act with her husband or anything other than somebody who may not yet be used to a sexual relationship asking whether she has gone too far. Don’t go finding guilt under every bush.

My take is I always thought the Catholic Church viewed sex differently from Protestants.

Yes, sex has to be ordered as in enjoyed only through valid marriage bonds, AND be open to the creation of new life.

But we see sex as the wonderful fulfillment of God’s plans for marriage. Unlike the Protestants who basically view sex as a necessary evil. If that makes sense.

Talking about sex in itself isn’t sinful, heck, Venerable Fulton Sheen even gave a sermon about love and sex!
