Talking in Church comment?

Would anyone care to comment on all the talking that takes place in Church just before Mass? I would like to pray or read my bible and it is distracting. If the people are whispering I can ignore it after a few minutes but I still wish there was no need for me to get used to the buzz before I can concentrate on my prayers. However, if this were my only gripe so to speak I would not be writing this. I would hope that an usher would respond to this because here is my real gripe. This past Sunday a man and a woman were talking loud, louder than a normal conversational tone. I can compare it to the voices that I heard in public places (like a restaurant) where it was obvious that a person wanted to be heard by everybody. No one said a word; no usher asked them to keep it down. Is this not something that an usher should address?
I just thought that I would add that although as of late we have been attending the N.O. Mass, we had stopped attending the Parish where the Tridentine is said every week due to this same problem. In this particular Church’s configuration those visiting outside can be heard quite clearly from the open air part of the Church and they talk almost clear through the entire Mass.

It would be nice if our parishes had signs at the church entrance that say something like “Please keep a respectful silence”.

Well, in my parish both the ushers and priest contribute to all the noise before Mass. It should be addressed, but it isn’t.

It would be nice if our parishes had signs at the church entrance that say something like “Please keep a respectful silence”.

Trust me, they are not hard of hearing.

I would hope that you are attending a parish elsewhere during this time? Is there another parish that offers a more conducive atmosphere that you are looking for? My suggestion if there is a religious community nearby that does Masses, attend there. I have quit attending parish churches for over a year and am attending Masses held at religious orders. I have found this most hepful and very beneficial.

The priest needs to address it from the pulpit.

In the parish I attend, it’s quiet before Mass, but you’d think Jesus had left the Church because of the loud chatter afterwards. I want to shout, HE’S STILL HERE! The cause is lack of reverence for the Eucharist.

I can totally sympathize with you. Have you talked to the usher? If you have not, I would suggest talking to him. If it still does not get rectified, chain of command may be helpful. Priest.

I wonder are all the parish churches noisy? Wow I really am not in touch with parish churches these days, I remember going to one for a funeral of a friend not too long ago and was aghast at the level of noise before Mass. It was hard to pray. I finally had to go to the front pew and kneel in front of Jesus and ask him for the grace to make it through the Mass. The Mass was beautiful, but the talking beforehand was not.

Yep, all noisy. Priests are more interest in most people liking them than attempting peace and quiet for others. At least that is my “read” on it. So, does anyone who is in a position to deal with this in his particular parish wish to weigh in?

Talk with your actual priest and see what he actually says. “Priests are more interested in . . .” sounds like an unfair blanket statement, as if priests were all a collective hive rather than actual individuals; the vast majority of them take their vocations as shepherds seriously.

waste of time unless your comment or complaint is made to the pastor, it has to come from the top down. usually the ushers are contributing to the general commotion so that is no help, in my experience.

Speak to the coordinator of ushers at your church or simply call the parish office. I would be very careful with the blanket statements you’ve made above. The priests in these particular parishes may be working on correcting problems over time. Also, the floor plans you described in your first post - an open area attached to the sanctuary - very likely means it is almost impossible to keep the sanctuary completely quiet.

Due to time constraints I intend this reply as an address to several people above. I know the pastors of two of the parishes. These priests are among the more orthodox in the diocese. I could tell you a horror story or two. I can indeed make a blanket statement regarding this diocese. It is not anywhere near almost impossible in the case of the open air part of the church. It just takes a few weeks of sending ushers out to shoo them away. It worked for a couple of weeks as a matter of fact. At any rate I sure wish an usher would reply here. Perhaps just to explain why ushers are many times some of the worst abusers and I’m tired of it.

Was the first Mass, the last supper, quit, or more like a family diner?

There are two pillars: teh sacredness of God, which is far away for us, and the Emmanuel concept: God is among as. We are noisy.

I like the sacredness so I go to a church about 25 minutes drive, were there is exposition before mass, ant thus silence. But I do not feel that I am the authority over others.
