Most people do it. It’s when you talk to yourself compulsively and say the same things all the time that you should see a neurologist about a possible problem. Or if you think someone is there talking to you that no one else sees. It could have many causes, even something as simple as an allergy or drug reaction possibly. To know for sure, see a doctor. Or if you think so even though you don’t see the “other person” either, it is likely time to see someone about that. Could be serious. Many diagnostic criteria are available to help you decide whether you want to seek help and what kind of professional you should start with. But as long as you’re just thinking out loud, it’s very common and normal.🙂

Well I don’t say the same things or do it compulsively and I don’t think that there’s anyone “talking” to me lol. Its more thinking out loud like you said. Like if I am trying to choose something I weigh the pros and cons out loud and stuff like that. I feel better knowing a lot of people do that lol

I worry more about the conversations I have with my cats than I do with myself. 😃

Yep, talking out loud to “work through” something is normal.

When I work on a paper or an essay, I say the phrases I want to use next, or read a part out loud. Sometimes I make spontaneous ejaculations when I am frustrated. Most of all, when I am reading a book, it’s like I"m talking back to the text. “I didn’t know that!” and “So the author is saying X? What about Y and Z?”

Especially when I’m about to leave the house, I recite my list of things to have/do: “I shut the lights off, I put up the puppy gates, I have fresh water in their bowls, I have my CDs for the car, and I have my shopping list, etc…am I forgetting anything?”

Some of us are “auditory learners” - that means that hearing helps our brain to process information better. (I’m not so much a verbal learner, I’m more of a visual learner, so talking out loud doesn’t help me as much as making a list in this regard.)

Everyone does that-it’s how God made us.

Well I am glad to know that I am not the only one that does it. I do want to add that I never do it in pubilc just when I am alone.

I talk to myself all the time. Usually when I’m working through things, thoughts and tasks. I’m also an only child, so I’m used to keeping myself company. Though, when I was little my mom used to tell me that the baby Jesus would keep me company.

If you start arguing with yourself, you might have a problem. 😃

Yeah, it’s kind of too bad but there’s lots of things we hide from public view-it’s called shame and has to do with propriety and the fall and loss of innocence and all that-but sometimes if you can’t talk to yourself, who else is going to listen? Anyway, it’s very natural.

You all have lost your minds. Thankfully I’m on antipsychotics and can see this.🙂

I am alone a lot, both here at home, and on the job. I talk a lot, sometimes to myself, sometimes to the Boss. Besides Him, usually I am the smartest conversation partner I have 😛

Dear Catholic08,

Sure I talk to myself, especially in the supermarket, so
I can remember what I am there to buy.

I take the attitude:

“Talking to myself is the only way that I
can get my own attention.” 😊

Josephine Hull is perfect, as Elwood’s sister.

The problem comes when you disagree with yourself and lose the argument.

Nope, definitely not crazy. I do it all the time. 😃
