I met two Mormon Missionaries last Saturday and we talked for about an hour and an half and found them very interesting. Ill be meeting again tomorrow and I would like to dive a bit deeper into Mormonism, and how it contrasts with Catholicism.

I would appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions for this faith to faith conversation, no questions that are aggressive or confrontational just polite curiosity.
They love Testimony in their church! Once two came to my door and I testified I was so happy to be in the Church established by Jesus (using the You are Rick statement Jesus said!) and to be able to receive his Body and Blood in the Eucharist. They were taken aback and left. For more hints see You Tube. There are Mormon Converts on and especially the Journey Home. A few were missionaries.

No we don’t do the same thing, and they are not “offering” they are manipulating people. They use the same manipulative tactics that used car salesmen use.
Based on my interactions with many mormons, I find this not to be true…

Ask them if they look forward to having a wife in Heaven. I sure do! :yup:

Look up commitment as a sales tactic. LDS missionaries always push you to make further commitments. It’s part of their missionary manual, every single lesson has suggested “commitments”. That’s manipulation.

Why do I look forward to it?

Many reasons. One, for companionship. I don’t have good social skills, which makes it pretty tough to look for a potential wife. I won’t have to worry about that in Jannah.

What about family, friends? Why specifically “wife” why won’t you have to worry about it in Jannah will you be “given” a wife? Wouldn’t it be better to work on your social skills now?

I’m a tad late to the discussion, but…

There are as many different types of Mormon missionaries as there are Mormons. After all, just about everyone who is a Mormon spends time as a missionary. It’s not super likely that a Mormon will convert to something else while in the process of doing the 2 year missionary stint (I forget the actual name for it) but everyone has conversations, everyone learns things, and sometimes- depending on the person the approach what they hear and how they eventually respond- some people do wind up leaving Mormonism straight out or drifting away a little at a time within 2 or 3 years of finishing up their time as a missionary. Granted, a lot of them also return in great spirits, get married, and raise lots of Mormon babies, but there’s some of both and overall the retention rate for Mormons is not amazing. Not awful, really, but also not amazing.

Some Mormon missionaries are a brick wall, they do this intentionally and they know they’re doing it. But not everyone is like that, it’s case by case like it is with anyone else. It’s well worth asking if you really have an opportunity to get anywhere, and without knowing anything else but “This is a Mormon missionary,” the answer is “Maybe yes, maybe no.”

With that being said. For them as Mormons and you as a Catholic, the single most important point of interest is the Great Apostasy. There are some passages from Scripture that all of you may agree to look at, but the place you may want to focus on is early Church history. I recommend bringing up the names of the first three main leaders of the early Christian church (right after the apostles, but still well within the apostolic era…which you might have to explain a little bit). Clement of Alexandria, Ignatius of Antioch, and Polycarp of Smyrna. Introduce the names and perhaps a bit about what made them important. Here is the key point, though- focus in on how they died.

All three of these men were martyred. Some of the details are less than perfectly verified from a historical standpoint, but we do know for sure that all of the were martyred. Do some work on this history and be ready with it. This gives you a perfect opportunity to ask if these three men truly died for the actual Christian faith, or if they had fallen into apostasy and are therefore held in a different regard than any of their immediate predecessors who were also martyred. If you like, you can do a bit more research and come up with a few other people who were martyred for their faith at various points in time after these men too.

Even the nicest and most open sort of Mormon missionary is going to be a bit evasive, not because of any outstanding character flaws, but because the Mormon church is not super specific about when the Great Apostasy happened. It was pretty quick, apparently, but no one’s given any estimates in any official capacity. It’s kind of fuzzy, and this is a way for you to make history a bit less fuzzy and gently show why this matters and why it makes a difference. There is a way in which this can be shoved in someone’s face, but there’s also a way to tell some parts of the stories that belong to the ECF’s in a way that will actually be heard.

Just to inform anyone still interested, I met with them and it went very well just like last time. We discussed a few things about the Book of Mormon like in the first Book, Nephi on what was described as the abominable church. Have to admit first time I read it I definitely felt it meant the Catholic Church, just on how the way it was described. Of course the missionaries didn’t say it was, but of course they wouldn’t.

We also discussed just are different understandings of what God is and also Heaven and Hell, it was interesting to see the differences between us. I also told them about how the Church teaches the Pope is the representative of Jesus on Earth, and also how we view the Eucharist.

At the end I offered them Miraculous Medals which they accepted, and they asked I pray about the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. In return I offered them my St. Martin De Porres prayer book which has Catholic prayers, they also accepted it.

Ill be meeting them again, perhaps for the last time maybe and they want to show me their Chapel so ill be meeting there. Thanks for the discussion tips and keep me in your prayers.

Being hospitable and sharing our faith is what we are called to do. We are to plant seeds. Without dialogue, I’m not sure how seeds can be planted. 🤷

In 2014 & into '15, we had a dialogue with two female missionaries. Since it was Winter, we invited them into our home for hot chocolate and cookies. They came over on three occasions. The conversation tended to be on proofs of the great apostasy. No great apostasy, no need for a restoration. They professed that the Church lost its way beginning somewhere around 100 ad, after the death of the last apostle. One of my questions which they had not thought of before, was how could they then believe that the Church was infallible in discerning that there were 27 books in the NT, and only 27 books. How could a Church with fallible men, centuries into a Great Apostasy infallibly make this declaration? Since it our second meeting was before Christmas, I invited them to the Christmas Eve Mass. To my surprise, they both came. We help them throughout Mass understand what was happening and showed them the order of Mass from hymnal. Afterwards, we showed them around the Church, including the 24 hour adoration chapel and the confessional.

So we did our best to drop a few seeds and trust that the Holy Spirit is capable of doing the rest. The girls left for a second geographic area in January '15 and we have not heard from them but we keep them in our prayers.

(side note, I’ve brought up the same point on trusting the Catholic Church on the 27 books of Scripture with JW’s. Their response is that all the books “Harmonize”…yes there is a JW tract on this somewhere. When I comment that this can hardly be true, the Book of Relevation doesn’t seem to harmonize with Galatians or any of the Gospels I get silence, and the last two JW’s that I’ve met have left in a huff, visibly angered that one could suggest that the bible came from the Catholic Church)
