You don’t that certain companies might curse their decks or put “good” spells on them and stuff?
Believe it or not, I have heard this. I have no idea how truthful that is, though.
The point of the thread was to assume what approach one should have (who is Catholic) when it comes to Tarot Cards for decorative art and trump games.
I think it’s already been answered. Basically caution should be used because u yourself already know what it’s known for by the public. And when dealing with controversial things, such as Tarot cards, u need to take the precautionary methods to assure the spiritual safety and well-being of not only yourself, but all those whom may get into contact with those cards.

If u have kids in the house who like to sneak around and might end up getting a hold of these cards, then of course, for their spiritual safety, u probably shouldn’t own them. U need to exercise prudence and evaluate all the risks of owning such things is worth the effort to keep them. Only u yourself can answer that since u know more than any of us do, how your life is, and whether or not other people may get influenced by your keeping and utilizing the cards.

God bless! 🙂

that is true.

I’ve known readers (I have an acquaintance that does tarot readings). Tarot are not supposed to “tell the future” or being means of divination. They are more for reflection. Each card has a meaning and you can reflect on certain circumstances within your life and how you may need to consider your actions. Very free will, not fate. Anyhow, that is how it is explained to me and from what I’ve read on them.

There is a lot of ignorance on here about what the the “Jeu de Tarot”. This game is simply a trick-taking card game. Tarot cards made for this game are completely different than Tarot cards made for occult purposes.

Divination Tarot cards:

They are completely different. Nobody uses Jeu de Tarot cards for occult purposes just as nobody uses occultic Tarot cards for the Jeu de Tarot. Owning a Jeu de Tarot deck and using it to play this simple and fun trick-taking card game is absolutely fine. Nothing wrong with it at all in any respect, it is an innocent card game that does not use cards that are used or intended for occult purposes, it has a different card deck than the typical 52 card deck we use for games but it is not the same as the Tarot cards used for divination or other occult purposes. So yes, OP, it is perfectly moral for you to own and use such cards to play Jeu de Tarot, and I am pleased to find another person who is interested in the game. I always found the scoring confusing, but it is a lot of fun. Just don’t play with two players, we tried that once and the gameplay really fell flat, its just too predictable and has much less room for strategic playing.

You are right, those 2 are most certainly different. However, the OP is talking about the Tarot of Marseilles cards, which I’m pretty sure are known to be used for occult purposes. 🙂

Thanks, I somehow missed that. All that means is that you have to take a little more care, maybe get them blessed to be on the safe side, but beyond that, I mean, they are a deck of cards that have been used for centuries to play a harmless card game, so long as they are used for that purpose and not for occult purposes I do not see a problem. (Of course, if you personally find having a deck that some people use for occult purposes a temptation to use them for occult purposes as well I would immediately advise getting rid of the deck)

Being very aware of the dangers that are possessed in using tarot cards for divination and the such, I was wondering if there would be any harm in owning one of the old deck forms (the ones they used to play trump games in like the 18th century (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarot_of_Marseilles) for the sake of admiring the artwork and for adding some beautiful decorative cards to play trump games with to my regular card deck:compcoff:
I have never understood this fascination and I personally would never have them in my house. Have we really run out of Catholic Art?!

But here is a thread that discusses this.

The variance of opinion here is interesting.
Yes it is! It has been my experience that many who decry possessing tarot cards or Ouija boards or ANY so called “occult paraphernalia” have no problem to turn to the horoscope page when they pick up a newspaper or look in TV Guide when standing in line at the grocery store.

Yes indeed…very interesting 🙂

Get a standard French deck from a European card company if you’re interested in the trick-taking game. Buying a standard French Tarot deck from Piatnik or Grimaud is no more occult or unusual (at least in Europe) than buying a standard 52-card deck from Bicycle, and I highly doubt that respectable companies like Piatnik, which produce huge quantities of cards for all types of European card games, have employees sitting around putting curses on their Tarot cards.

Just don’t get too absorbed in games of chance or play the card game for money. The use of Tarot (and similar card games like Tarrock) for gambling was originally what made religious authorities decry such card games, along with the belief that games of chance would undermine one’s faith in God’s providence (though this criticism could equally apply to any game that uses cards or dice, like Backgammon, Bridge, Go Fish, or even Monopoly).

Frankly, I don’t see the purpose of getting a Tarot deck for esthetic pleasure. There are 78 cards in a deck and you soon get bored with the collection. Get a set of 500 religious pictures and use them for that purpose.

One having a deck either uses them for tarot readings or wants to have them “just in case.” Even if you’re not a full time Tarot addict, you may occassionally feel the urge to turn one card. Just one card to see what it is. Then another. And another.

Many of you have said that it is not the cards themselves but what you do with them. I agree. That’s why they are so dangerous - they pretend they are innocent.

You are right, and for such people it would be a very bad idea to keep tarot cards of any sort around, but for those who are not so inclined who enjoy the art or the card game without being tempted to use them for occult purposes there is nothing wrong with them having the cards around. It is very important, however, to be honest with yourself about which kind of person you are.

Or because you want to play Jeu de Tarot or other tarot card game
