I just reread that blog entry, JCPhoenix, and found a part I’d missed… you equate anyone who practices whatever you deem ‘occult’ with pedophiles? Excuse me? How can you compare an adult with an interest in, say, crystalwaving or dowsing for water, with a child molester – no, how dare you? Certainly, you may have faced someone who tried to take advantage of you through your interest in cartomancy, but by that kind of logic, are you going to hold M&M/Mars wholly responsible for an actual pedophile luring children into a van with candy?

If a new-ager tries to preach the benefits of wearing shiny rocks around your neck to your children, it’s your responsibility to instruct them in your beliefs on the matter, and, should you consider it necessary, keep him or her from talking to them. Do you tell other people’s children about Jesus? It’s the same principle at work here, not some vast conspiracy to indoctrinate the youth of the world into bizarre Lovecraftian cults. Libel is not the appropriate way to deal with it.

It really doesn’t matter whether you like to look at them for the pretty pictures, play tiddly winks with them, take out all the negative cards, or paper your wall with them they represent the OCCULT. God says NO. The Church says NO. THE OCCULT AND EVERYTHING THAT REPRESENTS IT IS DANGEROUS AND IS NOT OF GOD.😦 JMHO.

Well, there us a type of, you might say, ‘tarot’ card(the ones i use) and, they are not called tarot. the are called angel/ Arcangel cards. instead of looking for advice from the high priestess, its from arcangels, uriel, micheal, gabriel, etc. i don’t think they are evil.

If you use them to foretell the future or receive messages from spirits or any such then indeed they are.

Why?because the bible says so? hmmm? Now, I am judging from your name that you are a woman. now the bible says loads of anti-women, woman degrading, and stone her to death for being raped sort of thing. why does everyone, just pick, choose and weedle out the things they dont like. now i am all for not stoning people, and i am a strong femenist, and frankly, the bible says alot of things thins i do not agree with. let me say it, tarot cards are not evil. some of the people on this site are staring to remind me of this woman:

I’m sorry, but you really need to learn what the Bible actually says instead of reading it out of context. The Bible is not anti-woman and to declare that it is is simply ignorant.

Feminists have screwed everthing up…and I say this as a woman.

If you really are interested in learning what the Bible really says on this subject, then check out the following link, then go clean the egg off your face:

Mirdath ~ I don’t expect YOU, of all people, to be happy with my declaration…after all, you are in the clutches of Satan and your divination with his cards. And yes, I stand by what I said…the damage done to souls via such methods is just as damaging as the abuse done to children. After all, we are spiritual children and the evil one wants nothing more than to rape and destroy our souls…as he as raped your own. And you are only so angry because deep down, you KNOW this is true.

Just as I knew it was true even as I dabbled in “the dark arts”.

It’s fun to be “counter-cultural”, isn’t it? It’s fun to defy God, isn’t it? Yet eventually we have to face ourselves, and our defiance, and eventually, we recognize what is true and what is evil, and we all have to make a choice.

Disagree and condem me all you want. It doesn’t make what I say or what we believe as Catholics any less true.

Go ahead and stand by it, the fact remains that you made a ridiculous, offensive, and sweepingly general ad-hominem against anyone you disapprove of. Care to justify your, ah, condemnation? I’ve not condemned you, you’ve done it to me. Am I a victim of ‘soul-rape’ or a perpetrator? Tell me.

Deep down? I think I’m right, actually, or I wouldn’t be in here playing at being the adversary. I’m not angry at all, I’m amused and bemused. Offended by your comparison of millions of people you don’t even know to pedophiles? sure, but anyone in his or her right mind would feel that way to be on the receiving end of such a statement. Christianity’s been on that end before, especially in its early years, remember, and I’ve seen many people on this very board up in arms about that sort of statement being applied to them.

And I believe I specifically said that I do not use the cards as divining tools. There it is again, in case you missed it.

Lastly, if most of the topics on this board are to be believed, I am not ‘counter-cultural’ – you are. If we accept for a moment that I am in fact in the clutches of the great Satan and doomed to eternal torment like the rest of this fallen world, then it is you who are going against the common trend. Feels nice, doesn’t it? 😉

“Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” - John 8:7

I don’t know, but I would say that tarot cards are not evil - it all depends on what you do with them and what meaning you give them. I personally don’t view things as given, in my opinion such things depends on what you make of it. What you call tarot cards is just a bunch of cards with pretty (or not) pictures to me. How can a paper with pictures be evil? No, I think tarot cards are neither good or evil but practicing occult ‘arts’ with them is.

I think we should ask a different question. Is tea evil because it’s often used for divination? If not and if tea is just fine unless you use it for occult purposes, why should tarot cards that are not used for these purposes evil?

Just my two cents.

If you think “feminists” have screwed everything up, then you’d better stop voting and put everything you own in your husband’s name. It’s because of feminists that women have the right to vote and own property in their own names.

You really need to learn history before you blurt out something ignorant like that.

Get rid of Tarot cards. Don’t fall for they’re-just-pictures-on-paper rationalization. Just get rid of them. There is more than enough to do that is acceptable within the Faith, and to go outside of it for spirituality is like going outside of your marriage with another man or woman for intimacy. Adultery and idolatry are closely linked. Even if there is no intention to use them, saying it is ok to keep them because they are just pictures on paper is like saying it is ok to keep pictures of your provocatively dressed ex-girlfriends on your wife’s dresser because they are just pictures on paper.

I have to agree with Sandi. Feminism is a broad term that saying that something happened because of feminism is like saying that Iraq was attacked because of Americans.

Feminism in various disciplines of social sciences have various stand points on different issues. You really cannot say that feminists are are anti-bible because by saying that you would be saying that I’m against the Bible as well. And I’m certainly not 🙂 .

God bless.

I hate to say it but just by trying to compare some of the people who posted here to the women makes you look her a bit as well.

Anyways, just because you disagree with it doesn’t make the Bible wrong. Yes, I believe that tarot cards by themselves are not evil since I don’t even believe items can be evil (good question actually, can items be evil?). On the other hand, as I said, I believe that magic is evil and therefore using tarot cards for what they are made for is evil.

Hmmm, now that makes me think. Can you “use” tarot cards just for fun because you don’t believe in them. Not that I own them but I personally think they are really what they are, pieces of colorful paper and there is nothing magical about them. Basically I don’t believe that evil things can be done with them even if you would want to (unless you have some kind of magical powers in which case you can probably use anything for divination purposes). Sure trying to use them for divination is already wrong - it’s like trying to kill someone but not being able to. But that’s not my point.

EDIT: I hear that they were supposedly designed for games and we later used for divination. I don’t know how true this is but this would just pretty much support my believe that tarot cards are not evil but divination is.

EDIT2: Of course then there might be the argument that by playing with tarot cards you might encourage others to sin. Well, this is probably a good argument against them.

Just FYI:
Tarot is the correct spelling and rhymes with narrow.

Ouija is the correct spelling (no “Q”) and is pronounced “wee-ja”. Oui is french for yes and Ja is German for yes (you know, like in “Der Kommissar” ;).)

If we ever have the opportunity to talk to someone about these things we have more credibility if we pronounce and spell the words correctly

It was originally a game-deck called tarocchi, in 17th century Italy. Divination came later, as did the development of the standard deck of 52 playing cards from it. So if you extend your argument (admittedly fallaciously, I’m not being serious here), by playing bridge or hearts you might ‘encourage’ sin 😉

Hi,
this is actually the first time I have EVER posted in a forum. I was just in another forum where a bunch of pseudo catholics were defending tarot card reading etc. I don’t want to sound arrogant or bigoted but stay as far away from any occult as possible. There are NO SUCH things as ‘good witches’. witchcraft is witchcraft and diabolical PERIOD! Whether it is wicca or any other type. I myself have been under minor demonic possession before and have had to have numerous exorcisms done on me. Now I am free but I pray THREE prayers that have helped me so much. One is called “the Exorcism Prayer of Pope Leo XIII”, the other “Breaking the Bondage of a Curse” and the third “Spiritual Warfare”. I am posting because in the Warfare prayer it lists all things that we are binding and casting out. Here is just a short clip…
In Jesus’ Name,
I break and dissolve any and all links and effects of links with: astrologers; bohmos;
channelers; charters; clairvoyants; crystal healers; crystals; fortune tellers; mediums; the
New Age Movement; occult seers; palm, tea leaf, or tarot card readers; psychics;
santeros; satanic cults; spirit guides; witches; witchdoctors; and, Voodoo.
In Jesus’ Name, I dissolve all effects of participation in séances and divination, ouija boards, horoscopes, occult games of all sorts, and any form of worship that does not offer true honor to Jesus Christ.
You will notice the breaking of the effects of tarot readers…

I cannot convey with enough gravity how powerful and dangerous messing with demonic stuff can be. And I never messed with the stuff in the first place but it was more that there were curses on me and my family. From the movie ‘the Rite’ with Anthony Hopkins, he says to the young whipper snapper who didn’t believe in anything…he said (paraphrasing) “The devil doesn’t care whether you believe in him or not he can still attack you”.

thanks for suffering thru this eternal posting!!!
God bless all of you and if you want to really be safe and protected, do the three prayers (if there is any interest I can email you pdf’s) but a very very powerful weapon against the enemy is THE ROSARY!
JPII fanatic!

Apart from the incredibly wonderful Meditations on the Tarot, there are also a number of other tarot books written by Catholics - in English the best known is probably Mark Hederman’s Tarot: Talisman or Taboo.

Someone earlier said in this thread that tarot originated in what is now Northern Italy… however, this was in the early-mid 15th century (not the 17th).

It may also be worth noting that nearly each and every image of the trump sequence is found either on Gothic Cathedral carvings (from circa the 12th century) or in various Christian (and hence Catholic) illuminated manuscripts of those times.

As to the card that is modernly called the ‘Popesse’ (or High Priestess), there are similar representations of Mary Queen of Heaven and of the Church in her symbolic guise.

Of course this does not mean that many decks designed in the last 30 years similarly reflect the Christian worldview out of which tarot arose.

I don’t know why you’d have tarot cards or a ouija board, except for divination. A person might read the I Ching just to learn about Chinese philosophy, but if you’re not looking for a fortune or the power to uncover hidden information, tarot cards don’t have much to offer.

So, with the step-daughter, the thinking goes this way:
  1. If tarot cards are used, it is divination. If the cards aren’t used for divination or divination is not real, then, the cards are silly and useless, because what can you do with them? For most people, nothing.
  2. If divination is real, then why do it? Either the cards have information to offer or they don’t. If they don’t, and you believe they do, then you will base life choices on baseless information. That is worse than silly and far worse than useless.
  3. If the information offered by tarot cards is real, then where is it coming from? What power would have any reason to hand that knowledge out for free? How would you know what the chances are that the information is good or bad? How can you check up on it? If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.
IOW, either it is nonsense and a waste of time or else you are messing with a powerful force that can lie or tell you the truth as it pleases (whether because it has a will and wills to do it or because it has no will but your understanding of the natural forces in play isn’t what you have yourself cracked up to be) without you being any the wiser. The revealed truth is that divination is forbidden as a form of idoltry, and the thought experiment just done demonstrates why revealed law also makes perfect rational sense.

That sounds like a lose-lose set of propositions. There is no short-cut to wisdom, there is no short-cut to discerning the best courses in life, there is no magic that will give you life’s answers. Live your life instead of looking for wisdom in a pack of cards. Until something like bridge or cribbage is invented to use them for, get rid of them.
