Isn’t it a sin to desire the goods of this life, even if it is food? Scientific studies show that the same part of the brain that is responsible for pleasure from food is also responsible for the pleasure had during sex, and also revenge.

In Revelation 18, where the angel lists the things that the great whore Babylon lives for, he lists “the foods that your soul lusted after”. I just feel that to put my attention on food, the taste of it, the texture of it, etc., is adultery against the truth, because the food’s flavor and texture and pleasantness of is NO significance and has no bearing, upon anything except my flesh – which is supposed to be CRUCIFIED; not pampered. I understand that there are different types of crucifixion, some more important than others, but I can’t help but feel wrong when I enjoy food that tastes good… but then when I try not to, I feel that I am somehow fighting against “God” unless what I think is God is just the tempter…

If you asking if it’s a sin to enjoy good food…the answer is heck no.
Just about everything can be enjoyed in moderation.

No, I mean that it is like living for more than one purpose. If I am living for God’s purposes, I cannot anymore live for my purposes (to make myself enjoy pleasure by planning to eat good food). If I am living for God, I am living for God, and God alone.

sex is for pro-creation + marriage couple’s bonding. It is not the pleasure of sex that is wrong, it is the misuse of our sexual organ and brain.

but food, we need to eat everyday to stay alive. again here it is not a pleasure of food that is wrong, it is the misuse of food. excessive food may be dangerous to your health. Same goes to excessive MSG, salt, etc.

so your name is “totally lost” and you’re giving advice?..

Jesus said that without fasting and praying, some demons could not be conquered… remember also that many of the llust of the flesh are “wrath, malice, envy” hatred basically, which the pleasure of food and the pleasure of revenge utilizes the SAME pleasure centers of the brain… so abstaining from one thing could have an effect on other areas of my life…

i hope u are not judging me from my nickname.

sure u can fast or abstain for your self-control and spiritual gain. it still doesn’t make eating tasty food a sin.

sexual pleasure utilize the same pleasure center as well. so a marriage couple cannot have sex forever?

it is not the act, but the mental intent and mental occupation with the vain and passing pleasure that seems to go AGAINST what Jesus taught… instead of having my mind’s intent and mind’s occupation with pleasing one who is not me - Jesus, who I love.

if you want to please Jesus more, do an extensive research where is the Church that He built in this era and follow it.

the importance of charity:
"On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, “Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me.” Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, “Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me.” These will ask Him, “When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?” And Jesus will answer them, "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!"

i don’t want to argue about which church is true or not; certainly there are people who are saved and unsaved both in the RCC and in Protestant ones.

beside this, you can do all the “charity” work you want, but it may not profit you anything if you don’t personally know Jesus Christ. “whoever does not love the Lord is cursed.” because He is the Shepherd, and if you follow HIM you will be given eternal life by HIM, and no matter how many good works you do without Him they are meaningless. Or else all the buddhists and muslims are inheriting eternal life as well. giving to the poor is a side-effect of walking with Jesus…

not arguing here. just suggesting you do extensive research on your own - good for extending your understanding about Jesus too. Debates usually do not change people’s mind.

and i am still on my stand, whether u are doing it to please Jesus or not,** eating tasty food is not a sin.**

I do believe that you might be addressing the wrong crowd with this question. Aren’t a large portion of protestant denominations strictly against drinking alcohol period without the virtue of temperance being brought into question? I think that is a parallel argument with the one that you brought up.

If you enjoy a back rub, a relaxing time in the hot tub, or a delicious slice of cake without any of these things in excess, then you’re living your God-given life.

You seem offended. seek God to help you with that problem. God will judge.

Like I said, I don’t think it is the act itself of eating that is evil, but it is the giving of my heart and plans to experiencing ANY temporal pleasure, because it makes my spiritual “tastebuds” dulled to eternal reality to give myself to temporal reality. To eat something without a lust to do it is one thing, but to crave something, even a little bit, and then do something because the human body craves it, is weakness…

“watch and pray lest you enter into temptation, for the spirit indeed is willing (to the the Father’s will) but the flesh is weak (weak to doing the will of God)”

I’m not offended, I apologize if you misconstrued my post. May the peace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

Eating is one temptation that is unlike any other. You can physically stop smoking, you can physically stop drinking, but you cannot physically stop eating. One thing that really helped me with these kind of temptations was the Rosary. Our Lady’s interventions have made a large impact in my life and hopefully they will do the same for you should you take my advice.

God Bless

Actually, by the grace of God, many have fasted for years and even decades - Catholics, by the way.

Fasting is wonderful, it is ‘housecleaning’ for the soul in my opinion.

You will not die if you stop smoking. You will not die if you stop drinking alcohol. You WILL die if you stop eating. Which makes this a unique temptation.

I’m sorry but I have come to the conclusion that you are just trying to argue. I have given you the only advice at my disposal because it reflects on my personal experience.

May the peace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

I’m sorry that you think that. Thanks for your opinions; hopefully I will be able to share experiences and opinions from other precious brothers and sisters like yourself. You don’t have to eat daily. I know people who work in construction who have done 21+ day fasts, so don’t make excuses. Either you love the Lord and His eternal Kingdom, or you love your flesh, the devil and his world.

Are you a construction worker who fasts for 21+ days? Lets be honest now. He’ll still needs to eat to survive. Anyone will eventually have to eat to survive, which was what I originally meant before you started to dispute that.

Addressing your comment that you either love the Lord and His eternal Kingdom, or you love your flesh, the devil and his world: Let’s try to recognize the Lord in ALL forms and not just in a black and white perspective. Perhaps you succumbed to temptation so that you might become more humble and contrite which would be more pleasing to God then your sin? God’s higher purpose for each one of us is beyond our understanding.

Try not to be too hard on yourself. Go to confession: God will give you a new beginning every time you go. It is a beautiful sacrament.

It IS black and white, light and dark. I am not that construction worker, but I have fasted 25 days, myself, as led by the Spirit of the Lord.

Now honestly, I think you all are being a little bit too hard on the original poster who has somewhat of a valid point.

Think about if I offered you a dinner of baked cod, plain baked potato and a side of beans. It is a completely nutritious meal. But how many would willingly eat that?

There was an experiment at one of our local schools where everyone tried to eat on $2.00 a day. So basically your budget for meals was $14.00 a week. You can eat on that amount but you are not eating things you enjoy very much.

I don’t think it is necessarily a sin to eat tasty food but it could be if it becomes an obsession.
