I posted in Family Life about my husband in Iraq, and being wounded.

The crux of the matter is that gravel and rocks from a bomb left scars in his shoulder that look like some evil, evil smiling face. It is really, really, really freaky.

A plastic surgeon is hesitent to cover them, and actually suggested a tatoo to cover the scars because scar tissue seems to take up the ink really well.?

We visited a local artist, who said he could take the scar pattern, and cover it up with the Bald Eagle, with an Americal flag behind it, using the red colors to maks the scars. He could then fill in the whiter areas with his Unit’s insignia, all in all making a tatoo around 4 inches by 3 inches.

He showed the only emotion I have seen from him in months when he saw the drawing, but I am not sure of tatoos being OK.

He is probably eventually going to get a medical discharge from the Army, which is going to kill him. Should I give in to the tatoo, one, to get rid of that really freaky scar, and two, to help ease what is eventually going to be his letting go?

I think it’s a great idea. I’ve heard of a breast cancer survivor who had tattoos done to cover her mastectomy scar for the same reason.

No problems with tattoos in general as a Catholic. Not unless the tattoo is huge or the image is offensive to Catholicism or something.

I think a tattoo sounds like a fine solution in this case.

Since they are scars, I don’t know medically how to deal with them. If the best medical advice is to get a tattoo, then I’d go for it. A tattoo is permanent, but so are the scars. Be sure to choose colors that fade well.

A Catholic may have a tattoo, so there is no concern that way.
