I am trying to convince her not to get one. Some religous words but still in a tattoo. They are trashy in my opinion. Can someone tell me where in the bible it states that you should not do these types of things to your body. She is a pretty girl in college possibly going to do something regrettable. Thanks

It’s not in the Bible.

Tattoos are not inherently sinful but it can be prideful if done to show off, make a spectacle of oneself or to try to become the center of attention. The same can be said of makeup, clothing, jewelry, haircuts, working out,

I don’t know the answer to your question, but you may find something here (link below). It’s a thread on a similar subject that started just a few days ago.

Who are you to this young woman? And why are you trying to convince her not to get a tattoo?

They are not my thing, but I would not try to “convince” another that they shouldn’t. And if I did “they look trashy” would not be a very good argument.

I’d say Tim knows what he’s talking about. I agree with you buffalo it does look trashy and it also looks unprofessional. You can try to convince her to the best of your ability and congratulations if she heeds your words, but in the end she is the one making the decision. If you can reason with her reason with her and regardless of that pray for her. Assuming she’s rebellious she is defenseless against prayers 👍

Same here. I’d personally never get one, but I think it’s really not nice to say “they look trashy”.

There have been times when I’ve considered getting a tattoo myself, but the main reason I’ve still never gotten one is because I know for a fact I’ll likely get something I’ll then regret a few years later. And I’ve seen too many people making this mistake.

Is it really your business? It’s not a sin to get a tattoo unless the design is sinful in and of itself or it’s designed to call public attention to non-public areas of the body.

My main reason is that it hurts.

This is something I’ve been told varying things about…it’s supposed to be highly dependent on where you have it done and your own personal pain tolerances.

Leviticus 19:28. Jews are not supposed to have tattoos because of this provision in the Torah.

I don’t know how true it is, but I’ve been told that this verse was specific to funeral customs, hence the ‘cutting the body for the dead’ bit right at the start of the verse, rather than being a general prohibition.

Indeed. It really has nothing to do with tattoos as we know them. It was a practice in the area for them cremate the dead and smear the ashes on the their skin. “Tattoo” is a bit of a misinterpretation. There is no prohibition in the Bible on tattoos or piercings. I think when it comes to tattoos, it’s mostly common sense. If you work in a profession that looks down on tats, then make sure you get them in an area that can be covered.

As an interesting fact, in Bosnia and Croatia during the Ottoman Empire, it was a tradition particularly among Bosnian Croats to tattoo themselves, usually on the wrist or chest, with Christian religious symbols to assert their Christian identity and differentiate themselves from the Muslim Ottomans.

I agree on the common sense thing though- I work in retail where visible tattoos are a no-no, and I know pretty much every other job I’ve come across is similar. I did consider a tattoo on my forearm but with my uniform rules at work, I’d be required to wear long sleeves which would be fine in winter but a killer in summer.

I know of a good number of decent, well to do, good men who would not date or marry a woman with a tattoo.

Men/boys who like tattoos like them because they find the woman/girl with it more approachable sexually.

Search the internet and find articles/testimonies from men who do not like tattoos and present them to her. Show her the unglamorous side, she might then have second thoughts.

Interesting

***You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the LORD. *(Leviticus 19:28 RSV)

There it is. All the comments about ashes and funerals are points well taken but yeah, a major translation says it right there.

Of course it also says that that it is unlawful to eat shrimp. 🤷

I know the above is not from the Bible, but just in case your friend ignores the Bible, try this approach, she will think twice about getting the tattoo.

My father had a tattoo on each arm; one with my mothers name and the other with an American flag with a Latin verse under it. I can’t remember what the verse said, only that the tattoos faded over time and they were not large. My parents were married 50 years and no one gave the tattoos much notice. On females they are not so very attractive. Peace.
