Not intrinsically. It’s the content of the tattoo that determines the morality of getting one.

I think a tatoo is done for vanity and to call the attention of others to your looks. So maybe someone says"how cute".:rolleyes:It is not worth it.
It is not intelligent in my opinion to hurt your body forever, and maybe get an infection also.
A misuse of your money.Send the price of the tatoo to feed a hungry child, and feel great for your decision. You are Catholic, which equates with you are wise.
Have your personality, good character and deeds be the attraction.🙂
One day you may run for a government office, and you would look silly all tatooed.Don’t cut your wings.
Even some employers may find the tattoos objectionable.
You asked for advise. Don’t do it.🙂
If is is for temporary fun,use the removable ones, that come off.😃

Here’s something I’ve often wondered: Why don’t more people who are considering getting a tattoo have someone paint the design on first, in oils so that it lasts for a week or so? Then you could get a feeling for whether it’s really something you want to live with.

🤷

The straight answer is no, the church has no position on tattoos. I would think a tattoo of immoral nature would be problematic but the church has not made any official teaching on tattoos.

what part of “You shall not tattoo yourselves” do you not understand? the Lord said no tattoo’s Period!

Funny, however much I pay for a good concordance these days, they still always miss things.

How do you know more people don’t? I did this a few times when it came to having my arm done.

It also states in the Old Testament that we shouldn’t eat swine - when was the last time you had a slice of hickory-smoked bacon?

Why don’t you reread Leviticus 19, and stop at verse 19.
"Keep my statutes: do not breed any of your domestic animals with others of a different species; do not sow a field of yours with two different kinds of seed; and do not put on a garment woven with two different kinds of thread.
Better check to see that your shirt isn’t a blend of cotton and polyester. You are a classic example of cherry-picking* specific verses that you want to apply to your life. You’d better follow all the rules in that chapter before slamming others with tattoos.
    • I have two cherries tattooed on arm 🙂

One day you will face the Lord, and he may ask you what you did with the resources he allowed you to have. You could answer" I sent $100 and fed a hungry child for a month" :)or"I tattooed myself":o

I you want to make a statement use a bumper sticker, and lots of people will see it.👍
Good luck with your decision

That’s not a fair scenario. By that logic, we should never spend any money on ourselves at all and live a life of poverty. While that may be someone’s calling in life, not everyone is called to live that way. If you’ve ever rented a movie, had a nice meal, bought a nice Television or spent money going to a sporting event/concert, why would you be so different than someone who got a tattoo for fun?

I’m sure you’ve read what celticsfan1983 said. If you don’t mind, please re-read it since it hits the nail on the head.

Oh, and I haven’t spent money on a tattoo in about 7 years (only because I’m friends with a couple of tattoo artists).

Oh, and I also donate food and serve meals at my local homeless shelter every other weekend. It’s easy to send a check to some “Feed the Children” organization, it’s harder to spend your time. Think about this as one day you too will be facing our Lord.

One day you will face the Lord and He may ask what you did with the resources He allowed you to have. You could answer, “I spent $100 on DVD’s in the year 2009” or “I spent 100 hours helping those less fortunate in the year 2009.”

The worst thing is, because you are personally opposed to it, you try to make it sound like it’s immoral to get one. Please don’t turn your personal opinions on tattoos into another section of the Catechism.

In “Introduction to Catholicism” (Didache Series) page 313 it says in the section on the 5th commandment…

“No exterior reason or end justifies the mutiliation of the body. The following conclusions may be drawn:”

“The fad of having oneself tattooed could be a mutilation with no necessary or just reason.”

The argument is that today’s society puts too much emphasis on the perfection of the body whilst ignoring the perfection of the soul.

So, I guess the question should be "What is a just or necessary reason for getting a tattoo?"

Snowman who posted the original question asked it in relation to our religion.
I am trying to answer his question from the religion point of view the best I can.
He did not say,“do you think it would be fun to have a tattoo”?
He was thinking of a crown of thorns(Jesus’).For fun? or as an statement of loyalty to his faith?
Another person (Benjamin 808)is talking of a Claddagh holding the Sacred Heart.
It does not sound to me they are trying to have fun.
Besides, from a practical point of view now,if you have a religious theme in a wrist or other “visible” part of the body, which seems the whole point apparently, it may be making future employment more difficult.
Take the case of a teacher. The kids go home to tell "mommy, mommy my teacher has tattoos, religious ones.Next day you have the muslims, the jewish , the atheist, etc mothers trying to sue the school, unless they fire you. I read that teachers cannot use a cross visible over the clothing.
Say you want to be a sales person with religious tattoos.Your boss may fear you would send some potential buyers away.Or a diplomat,or many other jobs.My humble opinion

You are referring to practical reasons, some which might not apply depending on the field of work. Those reasons do not make getting ink a sin.

I can see that you are a very good person, and represent catholicism well.
I have also been a volunteer for several charities, and I was the recipient of a
special recognition at a ceremony.I guess you and I try to help others.
I am not interested in cds that much.
But when I see someone full of tattoos,I honestly have a hard time understanding the
reasoning behind getting them. All I can see is a person trying to draw attention for the wrong reasons.Maybe you tell me in what way tattoos cause you to have fun.
They are painful, they waste useful time, they cost money, they are for the most part irreversible., they can be the cause of infection if the person that does it is not very clean. When does the fun part start? Is it a good example for your children?
Would you take them to a tattoo parlor to get done?
If you are able to convince me of the positive points, maybe I will see it differently, although I doubt it.
Regarding the garment made up of two different threads .I do not read that passage literaly, but in a symbolic way.Keep things pure and simple, unadultered.Probably garments of two threads were more fancy and expensive.Be modest in your dress and looks,do not go for fancy clothes. That is my interpretation.Remember Jesus had to teach for all times,so that his message would be as useful then as it is today.
Finally,I need to say that I do not want to offend anybody that may already have tattoos.I am glad you are enjoying them.

But when I see someone full of tattoos,I honestly have a hard time understanding the

Their reasons are their own. When I see someone who doesn’t have tattoos I don’t have a hard time understanding their reasoning for this. I say, “To each his own” and move on.
All I can see is a person trying to draw attention for the wrong reasons.
“All I can see” is the most important part of this sentence. Since that’s all you can see your failing to see anything else.
Maybe you tell me in what way tattoos cause you to have fun.
It’s exciting getting a new tattoo - seeing the image you’ve had in your mind for so long finally come to life right before your eyes. You’ve never done this so it’s hard to explain.
They are painful
Not incredibly so. For some (like myself) it’s a good kind of pain.
they waste useful time
I could sit for a tattoo for 5 hours or I could sit in front of the TV (which is what I would normally do during the evening). Tell me, how do you spend every minute of your day? I’m sure you “waste” some of it too. Shame on you.
they cost money
I don’t pay for tattoos.
they are for the most part irreversible
A friend of mine got a large tattoo removed via laser - it’s completely gone with no scar, nothing.
they can be the cause of infection if the person that does it is not very clean.
I’ve been getting tattoos since I was 18 years old and I’ve never seen a tattoo shop that is dirty (sounds like you’ve seen too many movies - gasp - how could you “waste” your time like that?!) Tattoo shops are closely watched by the health department. New needles are used every time a tattoo is done, everything is sterilized. I’ve had one tattoo get infected (one out of about 30). Know what caused it? Me not taking care of it properly.
When does the fun part start?
It starts the second you walk into the shop. There’s music playing, the place is usually packed with very interesting and friendly people. You talk to your artist about what you want. He or she does a line drawing (or draws it directly on your skin) and then they get to work. Since you’ve never experienced this it’s so hard to explain.
Is it a good example for your children?
I can’t have children so I don’t have to think about this part. How on earth would it be a bad example though?
Would you take them to a tattoo parlor to get done?
Children are usually not allowed in a tattoo shop.
If you are able to convince me of the positive points, maybe I will see it differently, although I doubt it.
Your mind is already made up. We probably just need to agree to disagree.
Finally,I need to say that I do not want to offend anybody that may already have tattoos.I am glad you are enjoying them.
No offense taken, seriously. I’m sure a lot of people think the way you do and that’s OK. But please remember what’s not cool for you might just be cool for the next person. To each his own. I don’t judge someone when I see that they don’t have tattoos - I think, “It’s just not for them”.

Ever heard of temporary tattoos? 😛
I used to have them when I was younger. I would’ve kept at it too but I grew tired of the designs the shop selling them had. 😛

You just slap them on, let 'em dry, and they usually just last around a couple of weeks. 😛

Their reasons are so it’s hard to explain.

Not incredibly so. For some (like myself) it’s a good kind of pain.
Is there such a kind?

A friend of mine got a large tattoo removed via laser - it’s completely gone with no scar, nothing.
Tell me why, for the purpose of disclosure, did your friend go into the great expense(several hundred dollars)of removing it?
Having a son with 2 tattoos, and after having inquired on his behalf,I was told the ink is gone, but you can still always read the outline of the drawing, for the skin tells you where it was.

Children are usually not allowed in a tattoo shop.
I wonder why. There is fun, music , interesting people, and art

Your mind is already made up. We probably just need to agree to disagree.
Truthfully, I am curious.I like to know what motivates different people.
But,in the end,as you say, after we exchange our ideas,we may have to leave it at that. Agree to disagree.

Like someone said above, we all spend some money buying things that we enjoy.
but some things have more lasting consequences than others.
My two cents.🙂

OK then:thumbsup:
