Tattoos are not a sin. They are only a sin if you are Jewish.

This topic has been covered a bunch of times on the forums. Try a search - basically you’ll see that the church has no definite position on the matter…so it isn’t a sin, but mutilation of the body is. Some take the position that tattoos are mutilation. But as far as I know - someone correct me if I’m wrong - there is no final answer so it isn’t really considered a sin in the church.

True.

The extended answer is that mutilation is generally considered to be something that alters the function of a body part.

So if you were to cut off a finger to look “cool” that would definitely be mutilation.

At this point, ear piercings, most other piercings, and tattoos do not alter the function of the body part so are not considered mutilation by the Church.

Tattos *can be *sinful in a few ways though:
  1. if the money needed to get one is being taken from your other responsiblities (family, charity etc)
  2. if you get an offensive statement or image
  3. if getting a tattoo would put your health at risk (dirty needles, infection, etc)
I hope this answers your question…

like Celia stated, this topic has been covered a bunch of times here on the forums…just do a search and you will have at least a weeks worth of reading. But my answer above is the condensed version.

A young person asked our wise Priest if tatoos were wrong or a sin and he said “No, they are ok.” He then qualified his answer. But what he said to the rest of us really made me think. He said, “do not be prejudiced against those with tatoos.” 😃

I asked this same question on another thread because I was thinking about getting a religious tattoo, something with Our Lady, Christ or the Eucharist. The answers were mixed as I’m sure they will be here as well.

Tattoos For Chirst?

The part in the Old Testament that teaches against tattoos also teaches against being clean shaven & a few other things that it seems were intended for the Jewish preists. I wrote a paper on it a few years ago. If you e-,mail be tomorrow I will try to find it.

Tattooing is an art form, just like bas relief, painting, photography & sculpture. In theirselves they are just a medium. You can do sinful things with any art form. I have the Crusifix of San Demanio on my right bicep, the Meraculas Medal on the other, a large celtic cross on my left forarm & a “guardian angle” on the right.
Can anybody tell me if this forum site has a spell check??? 😉 I could use it

The instruction against tattoos was for the Israelites. They were not to do anything that would associate with or follow Cannanite rituals. You also see a verse about sewing two certain types of thread together…God wanted Israel to disassociate with the pagan Cannanites and tattooing was just one aspect. This wasn’t meant to be a perpetual statute and like the others who posted here, it would only be prohibited if it were in some way to bring dishonor to God…

Having many tattoos, I loath them. I find myself facing prejudgement, and at best a hesitation from people who know better. A near occassion for sin, possibly. An obsticle or distraction, Yes. I look at them as my battle scars with the world, a blemish, repentance of this is difficult. Tim

A perfect example of why someone should think long and hard about ever getting anything permanent done to themselves.

I am sorry that you regret your tattoos and that they cause you grief in your life.

Thankfully, The Lord refreshes my spirit, then flesh isn’t as important, just part of the world, Thank You for your compassion, Tim
