Tattoos on the Heart: God is a "Her"?

I am reading Tattoos on the Heart as part of a reading assignment for one of my religious studies classes, and I just want to know if the reference to God as “Her” is proper on page 20.

Here is the excerpt:

God would seem to be too occupied in being unable to take Her eyes off of us to spend any time raising an eyebrow in disapproval. What’s true of Jesus is true for us, and so this voice breaks through the clouds and comes straight at us. “You are my Beloved, in whom I am wonderfully pleased.” There is not much “tiny” in that.

No, it is not proper. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, not a “her.”

The way I see it.
God isn’t male or female but still spoken of with male forms.
He, his etc.
To speak in feminine wordings of God is very unorthodox it seems to me.

It’s not appropriate.

A funny thing I noticed is that public speakers who are addressing reliably liberal groups, such as on college campuses, can always count on a warm round of applause if they say “Now, God, if He - or She, were to do such and such…” The speaker always waits coyly for the approving round of chuckles and applause. It’s such a common trope with progressive speakers that it’s become a cliche.

If the speaker were to say, “Now Satan, if he - or she - were to do such and such…”, the speaker would probably be booed off the stage.
