I may not be pope, but permanent tattoos are not exactly the brightest or most becoming thing people have ever done to themselves.
I have a beautiful, simple tattoo of a simple cross on my back between my shoulders. I feel good having it there, and I feel it gives me extra protection in this life. You can choose the negative view of something, or you can embrace the positive intent.

It’s true some people make mistakes but how many times does a human being not make one you know? And it’s great you got something you love and inspires you, not something you are going to regret tomorrow…my problem was that I was raised by my family stating it was a mortal sin to ever get one now I know it’s not so I am not worried about the art on my body…and I am now more than happy to express it even more…And I definitely embrace it in a positive note!! As most of us who have tattoos do… 😃

I completely agree with you iluvmybabies. You are happy with yours and I am happy with mine. So I don’t know why I am letting this person get to me on here with their judgemental statements.

Also, it has took me this long of staying off the thread and gaining my senses to even comment at this point or I would have said something that I really regreted…Laworyn…you don’t even know what a terrible statement you made by saying those of us who have tattoos to “honor” a dead relative, are BEGGING people to pour sympathy on us. I cannot believe ANYONE with HALF a heart would make such a statement. You have more problems than just worrying about people having or getting tattoos. If you didn’t get my conversation earlier, I lost my brother. He died at the age of 26, perfectly healthy in his bed by just going to sleep and never waking up again. I lost my brother, my parents lost their son and my niece lost her dad! And you are going to say that I have a tattoo me because I am BEGGING people to pour sympathy on me! How dare you!!! Where is your heart? Where is your heart for people that have lost loved ones? I don’t think you have one. Then you want us to apologize to you!!! HA You apparently have not ever lost a loved one. I will never (at least not in this life) ever have my brother back. He was my only sibling. I thought he would be here with me for a long time, but guess what he is not and NO it has nothing to do with sympathy. I cannot even believe I am having this conversation with you. You don’t even deserve it.

To EVERYONE else, I am so sorry that you had to sit through and read my comment to Laworyn. I am just very upset that someone so crude would make a statement. Again, I am sorry to all of you for having to hear me out. God Bless you All.

It’s ok, we all get upset and must express ourselves and we all get hurt and must express ourselves some in different manners than others, mine usually consists of sitting with a box of kleenex!! LOL thus hbp!! hahaha!! No seriously!! I need to take care of myself or else…But there are some people that can’t understand the need or want of such art, memories etc. Besides only those that have it can really understand…🤷

I got my first tattoo with my father - we each got our family symbol - a conch shell. Since then I have added five more - three of which have strong religious significance.

WOW that is so sweet! Me do something like that with my parents ya right!! 😦 It’s ridiculous!!! My siblings all 3 of them wanted tats but because we were raised like that, my sister tells me all the time when I ask her “so when are you getting one?” She tells me “Oh I don’t think so I am not burning in hell just because of some stupid thing!!!” So yeah we have all been very well manipulated into such ways being a sin!!! That’s why when I contested it, I was an ignorant fool!!! 😦
But that is so sweet and wow major congrats on having such a great and supportive dad enough that you both spent father son time doing something you both enjoy!!! 😃

I don’t have any portrait tattoos (and would not get one, but for personal reasons) but can certainly understand why someone would get one. It is so sad when someone tries to push their opinion as morality.

And I am very sorry for all of you who have experienced a deep loss:(

Yes I am very sorry for those whom have as well…And it’s true I mean it’s like my mother with my tats who told me the reason I was in that death defying car accident was because God punished me for all my sins!! 😦

Wow I cannot even imagine if my mom said something like that. 😦

My husband and I are getting tattoos together in the spring. We’re both getting a rosary tattoo because we’re currently going through RCIA and feel that this has been such a change in our lives that we want a physical symbol of our faith.

Our moms (who are both quite anti-Catholic) are not happy about it, but we’ve told them we are NOT doing this for them.

Before I really discovered my faith, I never would have gotten a tattoo, simply because I couldn’t imagine embracing a concept or symbol for the rest of my life.

Now, I keep wishing for one. If our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, I want my temple adorned with at least one Christian symbol! I’m not an iconoclastic Protestant 😃

I’m thinking about one of the early symbols representing Christ and the Church as a ship amid stormy waters or an anchor. I just submitted a thesis on the metaphorics of water, so the whole water vs. stability & sailing subject is very dear to me. 🙂

Any suggestions and ideas?

This ship was found in a catacomb, and it’s simple, but I’d prefer something that integrates a cross, like the anchor does. The Ichthus symbol is also ancient and dear to me - fish as a life symbol, retrieved from watery depths, the symbol of Christ, the ‘fishers of men’ and all that…
