Your opinion is not objective truth. Even the Church herself does not agree with you. And I think we all know that if the Catholic Church thought tattoos were immoral, they would prohibit Catholics from getting them!
 
Actually, I think you owe an apology to the other participants on this thread, for presuming to understand their true motivations better than they do, when you don’t even know them in real life.

Why do you consider it objectively mistaken in ALL cases regardless of circumstance?
 
I said why already. If it’s a work of art, it’s meant to be displayed. If you’re not going to stare at it all day long and you’re not going to let other people stare at it, why get it? It’s stupid because you can’t easily remove the tattoo and you’re stuck with something you probably won’t like in 1, 3, 5, 10, or more years. I say get a henna tattoo, so if you don’t like it you’re not stuck with it.

This is your opinion. You are free to think it if you like, but don’t pretend it applies to anyone else. As has been repeatedly stated, you just do not understand.

People put artwork inside tombs. No one is ever going to see it. But it means something to the people who put it there. And there is nothing wrong with that, it does not make them idiots or stupid.
 
What don’t I understand?

If you get it to “honor” a dead relative, you’re begging people to pour sympathy on you.

If you get it to celebrate a child, you’re begging people to get you to brag about your kids.

If you get it as a sign of love for a spouse, people will criticize you because most marriages end in a divorce.

If you get a brand logo tattooed on you (Harley-Davidson comes to mind), then you’re a slave to worldly things through brand loyalty.

If you put it in a place where you can’t easily see it, you’ve wasted your money.

If you get it on your lower back to attract the eyes of others, then it’s called something I probably should not say on this forum.

If you get it and you don’t like it anymore, then you’ve wasted your money.

Really? And what if I have pictures of my dearly departed around my home? In my wallet? If people ask who they are and I tell them, am i begging for sympathy?

No, that’s not really the case. And that’s unfair. My father wrote a poem on his blog to honor my deceased grandmother. I think he would be highly offended if someone accused him of “begging for sympathy.” Same with a tattoo.

I guess the kids’ pic in the wallet has the same effect? And you know what? People should be able to brag about their kids. I’d rather hear about someone’s kids than their car

Are we always to live in fear of what others think? I thought Jesus told us NOT to do that. And also, not all marriages end in divorce.

I’m getting a tat on my back (mid-back). No, I won’t be able to see it all the time but I don’t think of it as a waste of money. I don’t think art is ever a waste of money, whether it be on your own body, or in a different form.

And leave Malia alone. She did nothing to edit your quotes, but was merely responding to your posts. We get it, you personally don’t like tats. But the Church didn’t say anything against them and it’s a personal choice. Don’t force your views on everyone or make judgments.

Except mine will be something I always like because it will consist of things that are a part of me. A cross (symbol of my faith) with a red rose and a lily below it (the rose for love, my birth month, and the Rosary, the lily for Mary, for purity, for my patron saint, and for the city of Florence, where my father is from) with fire coming from where the flower stems intersect, symbolizing an offering to God and a desire to help “set the world on fire”. Trust me, at least two years of thought have gone into this. I’m just saving it for my 21st birthday (my parents have given me wine with dinner and I’m not into the other stuff, and I’ll have lived in Italy beforehand so drinking won’t be special. I want something different)

Hmmm, I like Van Gogh and I have a (copy of) a painting of his in my room. I don’t “stare at it” all day long. Also, sadly, I can’t go around showing my tat when I have internships and school and want to convey a professional image during the work week. Also, most jobs, from waitressing to the most high-level careers, tell you to cover them. On the weekends however, I’m fine with it:) And I do it for me, not for the world.
 
I think a good comparison would be that a tattoo is like a poem or another piece of literature.
  • Many poems are the result of long, deep thought, and are beautiful. So are many tattoos.
  • Poems bring great pleasure to their creator and to some others who read them. Similarly, tattoos bring great pleasure to their owners and to some others who see them.
  • A good poem can be a great way to glorify God. So can a good tattoo.
  • Some of them, though, can be pretty awful, and that applies to both poems and tattoos!
  • Some people who write poems have bad intentions or write them for the wrong reasons, as do some people who get tattoos.
  • Some poems don’t turn out as well as their creators hoped they would. Same with some tattoos.
  • Some poems are lovely, but even then other people can misinterpret them. The same thing applies to tattoos.
  • Poetry is not for everybody. Neither are tattoos.
  • Writing a poem is probably not a desperate cry for attention, although it might be. Same with a tattoo.
  • Most people don’t write poetry simply for the bragging rights. Some do. Ditto with tattoos.
  • Some people write poems for their own eyes only, and never want to share them with the world. Some people get tattoos that no one else will ever see.
  • Some people write poems to honor the dead. Other people get tattoos for the same reason.
  • Some people write poems to commemorate an important occasion. Tattoos can serve the same purpose.
  • There will always be someone that hates poetry and thinks it’s the vilest thing ever created. Many people feel that way about tattoos.
  • Some people will look at the poems they liked or wrote in their youth and shudder, and hope that nobody will ever discuss them or see them again. Likewise, some tattoos will bring their owners a great deal of regret. However, many others will be a source of pleasure to their creators for years to come.
I will probably never get a tattoo, and I’m not really into poetry either. I might roll my eyes at the occasional poem or tattoo, but I’m not going to blast anyone for liking them or wanting one of their own.
 
I wasn’t blasting anyone, I was being blasted because others found it scandalous that someone was not enlightened as they are.

BTW Larowyn…your choice of language on a Christian site is much more offensive than any tattoo. 😦

I agree with you, you are right…I was not upset with that person and I was not judging either, as I stated before everyone has their own opinions but the fact that some of those opinions said are actually insults is very hard not to actually speak up about it… 🤷 Eh stubborn Catholic!!! 😦 lol… Anyhow, I don’t regret mine, I have had them for almost 11 years and I love mine…I made the choices of what I wanted based on the emotions behind them, if I choose to get more then of course it will be based on the same feeling… I am very sorry to hear about your brother, GOD bless you and your family and especially your Brother… :signofcross: I hear what you are saying and I will not continue on with such a person…
