My son wants to get a tattoo. He would like it to represent his Catholic faith. What is the Church’s feeling on this?

It is o.k., there is no teaching against it. You will just run into opinions ranging from it is fine to “God’s Temple”.

to me its common sense not to get a tattoo. Why? becasue i am made in the image of God and i do not need to enhance my apearence for my selfish needs to me people with tattoos are people that are insecure with how they look and do not apreaciate on how God created them.

Nah, not insecure here:) To me, tattoos are makeup, just permanent… I love how God created my body, but I see it as a mode of self expression…The only reason I don’t have one is because I have little money right now and the extra I get is going to school.

That said…plans are as follows:

Red fleur-de-lis on my right wrist, to honor my “Gaelic and garlic” heritage (I’m both Scottish and Italian, with ancestry from Florence)

Fire on my left wrist: left vein is believed to flow directly to the heart (well, all veins do, but this is the reason engagement/wedding bands were worn on the left ring finger) and I believe Love is more fire than anything…that includes divine love, because fire may seem like destruction but to me means renewal, warmth, and light, as well as the Holy Spirit…

Jobs? That’s what watches, bracelets, and long sleeves are for:)

It looks horrible when you get old? Well, I don’t expect to retain my youth, but I’d see it as a testament to my youth…wrinkles don’t freak me out.

Commandment of God? Church said it was morally neutral…so…

I’ll be a practicing Catholic girl with tattoos:)

There is no official teaching on it. As long as it’s not offensive in any way and won’t affect his employment opportunities (think get it on his back not on his forehead) then you should be fine. Just be sure to go to a good parlour. With tattoos you get what you pay for.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with tattoo’s. The church I don’t believe has a direct position on it. So it seems to be a matter of opinion.

Quite personally, I don’t think God would mind to much if you got a Tattoo of his image on your body. I think He’d be honored to know that your putting his image on yourself.

I don’t know how He’d feel about all these other kind of Tattoo’s people get. But as long as it’s not anything offensive and as long as it’s not all over the body (which I think just looks HORRIBLE. Like Kat Von D. I mean she’s beautiful. But all those Tattoo’s? That’s just TO much) then I don’t think God minds to much if you put a Tattoo on your body.

It’s not gonna do anything to damage your soul or change your personality. So I don’t see anything wrong with it. There’s nothing in the Church that’s for it or against it. So it’s up to you really.

I personally am really considering getting a Tattoo. I’d like to have one of me walking with Jesus on one side of me and my guardian angel on the other side of me. I’m just scared of painful it may be, lol. That and the fact that money’s a lil short now. But sometime in the future, I may want to get one.
