Basically I just wanted to know what the ruling is on tattooing. I’m an artist and I like the idea of tattoos, but if its a sin or considered a desecration of my body against God I want to know so I can get the idea out of my head. I’ve gotten conflicting answers and references supporting both sides. Like I said, I’ve wanted one for a while but I have also I’ve been asked more than once to design tattoos for friends who were going to get “inked” So far have done neither because I was unsure of the churches stance, and I don’t even want to design one for a non catholic if it’s against my religion.
If the answer is dependant upon what you get, then I have a more specific question.
Obviously I’m not thinking of getting anything anti-Catholic or pagan or offensive. I was thinking about a cross with my passed on grand parents initials, a scripture verse, the cross Constantine had a vision of, the back of the St. Benedict medal, or anything that identifies me as catholic. I’m proud of my faith and have no problem marking myself as a catholic, making up my mind on the mark is another story.
But my concern started when I broke my leg and my ankle about 8 years ago. Long story short I was told it was so bad that I would never play sports again and I would limp for the rest of my life. I told the physical therapist my goal was to be back to normal in less than a year of rehab and they assured me over and over again that my goal wasn’t possible. I’m fine now and had one of the fastest recoveries they had seen because of prayer, faith and a large amount of genetic stubbornness on my part. After the surgery I was left with two large scars on either side of my ankle and wanted to tattoo the space between them. My Last name is Stewart and our Scottish Coat of Arms has the latin phrase “virescit vulnere virtus” which means “courage grows strong at a wound” I thought it would be a good way to memorialize it, but have stalled for 8 years based on conflicting info. Please help.
