The Church has no specific prohibition against a tattoo because it has a place in many cultures. The basic teaching is that men and women should respect their bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. Yet people would think it odd that a Bishop, priest or deacon would go around with a tattoo on them. But, as I said, there would be no question of sin if the tattoo were decent. In our culture, however, parents do well to advise their children not to get a tattoo because they might find it embarrassing later on in life.

There has been a few discussions before on tattoos. If you do a search, you will see lengthly discussions.

Personally, I dislike tattoos and find them all ugly ( no offence 😛 ).

Some people will argue that our body is a temple. Others will say it isn’t against the Faith.

Funny, my husband wants to be a deacon and has a tattoo. It’s a wolf howling at the moon, and is related to his Confirmation name of Wolfgang.

He would like to get another, and designs ones full of Catholic heraldry and symbolism all the time. I think he will eventually get at least a Chi Rho. And he would like to get something with our children’s names, though if we keep on the way we are, that will look like a grocery list! 😛 (I am pregnant with #5 at the age of 32!)

I think the intent behind the tattoo would be the important thing, as it is with everything else. Is it done to defy or offend God? Is it done to glorify the self? Is it done with the intent of damaging or abusing the body? If not, I think they are fine. And when people do them as statements of faith, I think they are better than fine. On other threads, some converts have told very moving stories about why they got certain tattoos to commemorate their faith.

i wanted to get a tattoo of jesus, or since im lebanese st. sharbel, or the virgin mary… but i dont wanna if its bad too

Great thread! I was very seriously thinking of getting a chi-rho on my right arm but wasnt sure about the official position of the Church on this matter.
Does it have a position on tattoos??

I do know that the Emperor Constantine disbanded slaves being tattooed on their face as it in a way disgraced the face that was given to us by God

I have a tribal cat face on my back left shoulder and I plan on getting a few more. My next one is going to be an ankle chain with a golden rose on the top of my foot for my Consecration to Mary. My husband plans on a few also.

To the body is a temple argument:

Aren’t all catholic churces and cathedrals decorated with stained glass/paintings that type of thing? just my :twocents:
