i still havent got a sure answer… is it ok for me since im catholic to get a tattoo ?? i wanted one of padre pio on my arm… and one of christ on my back… and one of our lady … i know the body is a temple for the holy spirit so some people say its wrong and some people say it isnt… im confused  lol

Unless one has recently come out, or I missed it somewhere, I know of no info from the Magisterium forbidding a tattoo. Mutilation is regulated, but a discrete tattoo does not seem to damage bodily function. A tattoo that would damage your prospects for employment or whatnot, however, this is likely not a good idea.

It sounds like you might be talking about covering a large portion of your body? What are the health risks associated with that? Socially, what would be the consequences to you?

Oh, and if you find it relevant, the OT does have a law forbidding tattoos, but this is likely a cultic regulation. I would generally consider that superseded by Christ.

I’d like to know this too. I had been considering a tattoo for a little while (a very small and discreet one) but I have been reserving my action til I knew that it was okay.

I have a very open religious tattoo. I find it a good gateway to talking to others about Christ because I am often asked what it means.

I don’t see any moral problem with the tattoos you describe. Keep in mind, depending on where you put them, they may shrivel with age.

I wonder if people keep their tattoos at the Resurrection? I would say no, but I guess we’ll all find out one day. 🙂

so its ok for me to get one ?? what about the whole body being a temple for the holy spirit ??

I most associate that phrase with purity (like prostitution is a bad thing, etc.). I don’t associate it with a tattoo. However, since you do so associate it, do you feel you would be reducing your suitability as a dwelling for the Spirit by having a religious tattoo? In the case of a tattoo of Satan or something, I very much do see the relevance, but most Churches have nooks with beautiful art of some type depicting the saints. Not that you are a church building, of course. 😃

If your association is with the idea of an unblemished lamb as a suitable holy offering though, perhaps you might consider not marking your skin as a good thing. But I think that type of association is a personal one.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

I’ve wondered about that too. I also feel we won’t but as you say, we’ll see.🙂

To the OP, it’s okay if you want to get the tattoo. I’ve personally been in communication with Fr Serpa (one of the apologists here) about this subject and he assured me it was fine.

Edit: I should add that I don’t think Fr Serpa would actually encourage anyone to get a tattoo but my question to him was that as a Catholic are my tattoos displeasing to God and should I have them removed. His answer was no, I was under no obligation to have them removed. Also, as has already been pointed out there is no official Church teaching on tattoos. I think the Church has bigger fish to fry.😉

I have always understood that the Church says that you shouldn’t get tattos b/c of the OT ban, and that while the OT bans are not obligations they are good moral guidelines. However more conservative priests and bishops would definetly say the Church prohibits them. And I’d be willing to bet that the Pope would tell you that you shouldn’t. So i dunno. (although I do like your ideas for your tattos, they sound pretty sweet)

There is absolutely no rule or law against it. I can’t even find a suggestion against it.

I’ve heard the OT argument before, but I don’t believe there is a ban in the OT. Unless you are getting tattoos of pagen gods or something like that.

For everyone’s convenience, here is the verse:
Lev 19:28 Do not lacerate your bodies for the dead, and do not tattoo yourselves. I am the LORD.

Hello!

No, it’s not sinful or wrong or anything like that. I think it’s not a bad idea actually. It’s a pretty nice way to represent your faith and you may offer your suffering to God! Of course there are limits like to anything. If you tattoo your whole body and pears every inch of your skin then that’s an entirelly different matter. It’s kind of like drinking. But it’s not something I would do since I’m not a tattoo guy. But who know what I’ll do in 10 years :D.

thank you for your replies… i told my protestant friend that but he keeps telling me that the body is a temple for the holy spirit, which i know… but from that bible passage he keeps trying to prove what you guys are telling me wrong

To be honest I don’t understand this argument. Temple of the Holy Spirit = Tattoos are bad? I too understand the passage in a spiritual manner but if you would try to destroy or hurt your body then I guess I would understand this argument. But a tattoo? Tattoo, if chosen wisely, is a decoration and it doesn’t hurt you. Even the Jews decorated their temples to honour God. You seem you want to decorate your body to honour God as well.

It would be helpful to know what exact verse he thinks proves this. There are in fact several verses that talk about some combination of temple or building or household and spirit or God or something. The only verse that has the body be a temple combined with the Holy Spirit that springs to mind is this one below. As you can see, the clear context of the discussion is sexual behavior, like fornication and prostitution. It would be some type of extrapolation to get this set of verses to be about decorating your body and not sexual behavior. In fact it seems to suggest that the only sin that is “against the body itself” (and not outside it) is fornication. I have given the verses in the NRSV. I’m not sure which bible version your friend might be using, so I picked this one.
1 Corinthians6:15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, “The two shall be one flesh.” 17 But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.
18 Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.
If someone were to try to say that since our bodies are members of Christ (from the first line in the quote) therefore you can’t have a tattoo, I think this would be illogical (perhaps begging the question). You’d have to know being a member of Christ is somehow incompatible with having a tattoo from some other verse to get that conclusion. We do know, of course, that prostitution is incompatible, though, from these verses. I suppose you could try telling him that the tattoo is to “glorify God in your body”, but I usually avoid such remarks. It depends on how you two usually goof around together.

What you and your friend really need to discuss is how the Magisterium is the sole authority for authentically interpreting the Word of God, both the bible and the Sacred Tradition. 😃

You want a mark? Get your mark. It is that simple. The Church has no teaching against it. Anyone that disagrees with that is wrong, PERIOD. No argument allowed.

As a marked one speaking to one thinking about it I will say only this … Make sure you want it & where it will go. I advise a 3 month wait. Imagin it where you want it, 3 months later do you still want it there?

here are mine
