I’m sorry. I believe there is something of the beaten dead horse in this post but I can’t help myself.

I have heard exactly one song by Taylor Swift: Love Story. My daughter heard about her from some friends and we pulled up that song and listened. I found the lyrics inappropriate and said there was better music out there that was more supportive of family and we looked for that.

If I understand the song correctly, she sneeks out, meets a boy, and this is more important than family, normalizes strife over family unity and portrays parents as unfeeling/not understanding. Also, he’s the prince and she’s the scarlet letter? ewww.

Or is there another scarlet letter?

If you want to compare this to Romeo and Juliette, as she is obviously trying to do, there a lesson in the bard’s story and those kids suffer dire consequences for their actions. Taylor Swift gets to behave this way, normalizing it, and only gets happy consequences in return.

We chose a song to download instead that honors those puppy love kinds of feeling while maintaining chaste affection AND family unity.

As I said, I can only spk about one single song but as a sample, that really ruined it for the rest.

So what better music did you find that was more supportive of family?
 
My grand-daughter was playing a TS album from her ‘pod thru my truck radio on a recent road trip from the "other grandparents’" house to ours. I commented that if I were guy her age, I’d be afraid to date her, because if we broke up, I might wind up in one of her songs :bigyikes:

As a very amateur judge of personality, I agree with those who think she’s well grounded and steady. As a songwriter myself, I think that she has a good way with words and rhymes, furthermore, I haven’t found anything not to like in her lyrics. As a would-be vocalist, I think that she needs to spend some time with a coach that could teach her about phrasing, so she’d quit breathing in the middle of words. That said, she must be doing something right; she’s richer that Croesus. Just sowed $250k into Nick Sagan’s fund for childred who had their lives torn apart by the Alabama tornadoes.

Actually, the word is now that she is CAtholic, going all the way back to citing her Catholic bracelet with the saints.

She also grew up on a Christmas tree farm, not the usual province of Jews or atheists.

I AM a fan and have been following her since she started in Country Music and was deluged with questions and happily granted interviews, where her interviewers were not the fawning sophisticates of the present pop culture, but folks who she interacted with frequently.

Among her intelligent viewpoints:
  1. She knew (at 17 she said this) that her fame would not last forever and so she thought it WAS an honor every time she won and she was both grateful and surprised because her fans she knew loved her but in the real world she was not sure of support
  2. Her favorite purchase has been stationery so that she could write personal letters to fans
3)She has routinely used her wealth and fame to help out schools, music programs, disaster relief and sick children
  1. She bakes for her fan events and frequently those superstars discover upon going to her house on a Friday night that they’ll be baking cookies and cupcakes
  2. Her mind is so sharp that her father, a financial advisor, thought she’d have THAT as her career, hence the reason she is confidently managing much of her own business and investment
  3. All the superstars that had her on their tours attest to the phenomenal insight and talent she has with lyrics and musical arrangement. They also to a one praise her as probably the leading example of how to give back to fans genuinely and gratefully.
My little niece and I are bonded on Taylor and I became her favorite aunt when I gifted her with dozens of early interviews that most of the present day never saw.

I admit to being concerned about some of her new friends and her increasing fondness for extreme mini skirts and bare midriffs but cleavage, missing undies and otherwise inappropriate skin are not a function of her wardrobe, among her favorites being Audrey Hepburn, who never made a fashion wrong in her public life.

I am a fan because her observations have been mature since day one, her generosity and her gracious interpretation of animus towards her are well known and her young fans and older fans all routinely express their appreciation for her sincere appreciation for them.

God has put quite a few Catholics in the public realm and like Mother Teresa they are not preaching scripture they are living love.

Pray for her, it is a very dangerous world that she is trying to navigate and I hope that ‘falling in love’ over time will be with Christ. I don’t necessarily want her to become ‘CAtholic’ in her wording, not fundamentally. I want instead for her to follow the example of parables and again of Mother Teresa who used the every day to bring people to understand the parallels between love of humanity and love of God.

Again, please pray for her. SAtan and the world both want her to fall.

ACtually this one ought to be dragged up as she has never been more central than now in 2014. HEr video ‘shake it off’ is a directive to do what two generations have never known:

“Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me”

I can hear lawyers and the PC squad loathing the popularity of this song.
Boston College, Jesuit, along with so many others, did a video copying it and shows that kids get that these times of intolerance and being thin skinned are ludicrous. Check this out on youtube

Only one song, two albums back, had her use the term ‘halleleujah’. In country CAthoics are among many fundamental Protestants and so they often are more hidden about their faith but they ‘act’ CAtholic. A young, previously homeless singer did a song called “Paper Angels”. He lost his recording contract when he took off six months to hike across the country getting recognition for the homeless.

He also wrote a song that was about divorce and a father who’d abandoned him. He’d ended with a scene of him being in church seeing that he’d never been abandoned at all…looking up at the crucifix with Christ not having abandond us…you don’t promote the crucifix generally in country music.
