Hello educators!

I am trying to solve your problems with a new service product I am developing. Whether you are a cathechism or K-Gr 12, or educators of any sort:

1- what are your 3 biggest pet peeves in the ‘classroom’? (It can be ANYTHING)
And 2- how do you deal with them?

The more honest you can be, the better, as I need some real opinions!!!:o

Thanks in advance!

In catechisms I have had to teach out of, prose often has such a simple sentence structure and vocabulary that it goes below boring into insulting.

Thanks, and I concur! Those who neglect to use periods cause me to lose my breath while reading!!

What sort of product are you developing? I don’t think any of my “pet peeves” can be solved with a product.

Is it a federal law that severely restricts the amount of time states can require schools to do assessments?

Is it some form of hypnosis that gets the administration to stop writing checks to any and every “educational technology” company that comes along and spending all our money on tech junk that we don’t need, doesn’t work, and will be obsolete by the time I finish this sentence?

HA ha, I love these answers…all very true. Keep em coming, the truth is the best!I am a teacher who works outside of the school system, but I have a research project to find out the teachers’ biggest PIA problems!! 😉

AMEN.

I know my oldest is only in kindergarten, which isn’t supposed to be super academic, but when he comes home and tells me he watched two episodes of Curious George and played his online learn-to-read game for 20 minutes, and he’s only in school for half a day, I start to wonder…

I will admit I used presentation software a lot when I taught because it freed me up to look at students, and I could easily show images, but many, many people my age (and many of the students I taught) had an annoying habit of softly whispering to their PowerPoints instead of addressing their audiences.

I hear you…I, too, have a child in grade 1. I was surprised by all the YouTube in K-level. Children can be getting more caring, human interaction.

Are large classroom sizes an issue in the States as well as we have here in Canada? Has it been an issue for you?

I HATE presentation software. It makes me want to throw things at the presenter. I know that, in theory, it could be used as an effective means of instruction. But in real life, it usually amounts to the presenter writing their thoughts in grammatically lousy bullet points and then spending the lesson reading those bullet points to the class, word for word. Seriously? I’m paying for this? You could have just sent me this swill in an email and I would have read it in five minutes. Then, after we’ve suffered through this waste of time and brain cells, they include a link to the powerpoint, in case we want it again, or even kill a tree and print it off!!! This should be held up as the absolute opposite of teaching. Ironically, the last presentation I sat through like this was entitled, “Best Practices for Engaging the Learner With Low Executive Functioning Skills”.

At least YouTube is free. I teach music, so I use it frequently to show examples, but I rarely spent more than a few minutes of any given class showing a video. I’m more concerned with the “educational” video games and digital “assessment tools” which are junk, but they keep the kids quiet, so admin assumes they are engaged.

My district tries to keep k-1 under 20 and 2-5 under 24.

How about something that gets them to value an education over having the latest smartphone?
