Teaching CCD at Home

If, and I stress if, I teach CCD at home to my twins, what programs do you in the forum recommend? I have read about these three:

Religion for Young Catholics

Faith and Life

Didache Series

The materials from Igantius Press are excellent. What age are your twins?

Faith and Life is for grades 1-8 while Didache is for high school.

I taught all my children at home using the Faith and Life series. For the most part, it was very good (as a beginning platform), but we added the St Joseph Baltimore Catechism and really, as they got older, concentrated on that, along with Bible History.

I’m a twin and my mom always said that it was harder with two in the beginning (changing diapers, feeding, potty training, etc.), but easier with two later on. We always had a playmate, so we generally entertained ourselves quite easily. And we were never alone for too long where we could get into trouble. 😛

And just to stay on topic, we are using the Faith & Life series at home with my daughter right now and it is going well.
 
My only problem with Faith&Life came much later in the program, I think at the 7th grade level, where there was a discussion of masturbation (one paragraph, maybe), and if course, it was the one time I hadn’t prepared. Wow. THAT opened a can of worms, since we hadn’t broached that topic yet with our sons. They didn’t go to school, we didn’t have TV… at age 10/11, we didn’t see the need.

I don’t know if that is still in the program or not.

Good to know. I’m not that far in yet. They are on the third edition right now, so it is possible it was changed. Was it just a passing reference or did it go into detail?

Easier? Perhaps-but above all the Lord provides the needed skills for their growth. By all means some things are much easier such as getting ready for school, brushing teeth, and getting groomed. I even miss the tasks they seem to handle without any thought of me or my husband. I do not miss all of the days gone by but instead I look forward to upcoming memories we will make.

I LOVE Faith & Life. My mom used it with some of my siblings and I use it with DSD (dear stepdaughter).

For high school, I recommend “A Course in Religion for High School Youth” by Fr. John Laux. My mom used this one for me and I really liked it. There are four books (Chief Truths of the Faith, The Mass and the Sacraments, Catholic Morality, and Catholic Apologetics), one for each year from Gr. 9-12. There are also two companion books you can get: Church History and An Introduction to the Bible. We’re planning to use these books for DSD when she reaches high school (she’s the same age as your twins). We’ll have her do An Introduction to the Bible in Gr. 9 and 10 and Church History in Gr. 11 and 12, in addition to the other books.
 
ONE MORE QUESTION…My children just entered the church as converts this Easter. Should they start on the Faith & Life curriculum designed for their age group or play “catch up” since they are new to the church?

What sort of background in the Faith did they have before converting? (i.e. were you “nothing” or liturgical protestant or non-denominational protestant or something else?)

Did your children receive instruction prior to entering the Church? There are RCIA materials designed for children, a “catch up” curriculum, which would usually be done with the children before entering the Church.

Without knowing what their background was prior to coming into the Church and what instruction they had before entering, it’s kind of hard to give you advice.
 
They have had wonderful formation. They also had good RCIA and we continue family time here at home.
Also, does Faith and Life come in a packet with a teacher’s guide, handbook, and the like? If so does anyone have a link or place where this can be found and purchased?

If they had good instruction during the RCIA process, they shouldn’t need “catch up”.

You can purchase the Faith and Life directly from Ignatius Press including the student book, workbook, and teacher guide or from comcenter.com

I order my CCD books from Com Center, and they have always been great with customer service.

They can be pricey though. Check with your diocese to see if they have a lending library and also check online for used books-- but look for the 3rd edition, it has the liturgy changes.

Is the Baltimore Catechism an actual book and if so where can I get a copy. I have seen online editions but how can I get an actual hard copy?

It’s a multi-volume set of books.

Yes, you can purchase them through Catholic bookstores. The website comcenter.com (where I purchase my CCD supplies) carries them. Search “Baltimore Catechism” or go to the Bible & Catechism drop down.
