Hi!

Simply what I am looking to do is teach science and or math at a Catholic High School, probably in Arizona. I am about to enroll in a credential program that offers an intern option.

Oddly I seem to gather that there is somewhat of a shortage of teachers who want to teach at Catholic HS yet I don’t find many resources ppinging me to needed areas. Most of the individual school web sites don’t post openings nor do the diocese web pages.

I undeeatand I can commence teaching before the certificate is complete if I fill a niche and and a desired teacher. As I stated I am taking an intern track but have not gotten all the information on this and perhaps they assign schools?

I am a traditional conservative Catholic and have no intention of compromising my faith for money.

If you can offer some advice or direction I would be most grateful.

Btw in the past I posted similar and received responses about the difficulties in such a career. I am aware of these and am seeking constructive (name removed by moderator)ut.

Schools are just finding out their open positions. In my archdiocese (st. Louis), those teachers wishing to take advantage of the retirement plan needed to turn in the paper work by March 15. We actually had two faculty retire unexpectedly and these openings are now posted on archdiocese website. As far as the rest of us, we haven’t even gotten contracts yet so “officially” there are no other positions available. Occasionally, someone will have told the principal of their intent to not return but not always.

So my advice, be patient. Most schools fon’t know their needs at this point. Check the website of the diocese versus individual schools. Get certifications you need (ie, protecting God’s children) - it’ll make you look like you understand catholic things.

This is a good time to begin your job search as people who are retiring will be notifying their schools and so the openings in any district will be posted soon. If you go to our diocese it lists postions available in the schools all year long, perhaps the area you are looking at might do the same. In addition, I am a firm believer in contact and it should be quite easy to find the Catholic high schools and their principals names on the internet. A quick phone call introducing yourself and asking if there are any anticipated openings or current needs would not take much time. I have done this myself on more than one occasion and it worked. In addition, the college you are attending frequently have connections which can help you. Generally, it just takes some leg work to get things going. I will pray for you.

I tried several of the suggestion with no luck. Perhaps my search region is too narrow.

I’m going to focus on the Tucson region for now and will accept anything in AZ as that’s where I am gaining my certificate.

I know in my diocese, there is a blanket application to apply to any and all teaching positions open in the diocese (my certification was secondary, so I could get the greatest “bang for my buck” by filling out one application for every diocesan school). Beyond that, it was just periodically searching. In my state, I also had access to an online database that served public, private, and charter schools where one could apply. But not all schools used the service or had their own separate application process.

I don’t know what the hiring situation for teachers is in Arizona, but in my area, it is almost impossible to be hired for a teaching job right away. I know in other areas it’s not like that. You had to get your foot in the door by subbing first and have a LOT of experience.

Also, regarding your program, I did something similar to earn my teaching degree and as part of the program we had an application and interview process just for internships. A couple interns were able to launch those into full-time jobs, but that was more a “in the right place at the right time” situation, and as I recall none of the positions were in Catholic schools, although there were a couple charters.
