Taking in CCC 847, it says that those who through no fault of their own don’t know Christ’s Church, can still be saved. That means that a tribe living on an Island that never recieced the gospoel, can still be saved if they act good.

Protestants, who are protesting Christ’s Church, and know about it, and have the choice to join it, are damned, since it is of their own fault, right?

EDIT: Benedict’s recent comments on Protestants being part of the Body and salvation possible, were not stated infallibly, were they? He was probably just saying it to build a bridge for them to easier come back under him, right?

God alone knows the hearts of man. We can not presume His mercy nor can we presume His judgement.

I will leave the question up to God and I will pray for all who seek God, that the Holy Spirit will touch their hearts so that they can know the meaning of God’s love and mercy.

Do you hope that Protestants are damned? It is hard to understand where you are coming from. Will you be upset if Protestants have hope?

Not having come into the fullness of knowledge (of the Church) is not quite the same as fully knowing it and denying it. Only God knows the whole of a man’s heart.

Yes, because that would defeat the purpose of having a true church made by Jesus if you can follow man-made churches but still be saved by following a few teachings borrowed from Catholicism.

I am sorry that I cannot be more charitable than this but I think that anyone who would hope that someone else is damned is sick.

They certainly wont be damned but they will probably go to purgatory. 😉

Since you hope others will be damned, which means you are not abiding in love, you are probably far from saved yourself. Therefore, unless you depart from your hate and bigotry I suspect there is a vacant room awaiting you – with no air conditioning.

The first generation of Protestants, such as Luther, would have most likely, not definitely, known and would have been the ones making the choice. I say not definitely because Luther is believed to have had some mental problems. All generations of Protestants from the second generation on simply inherited the heresy. They do not have full knowledge and as such did not make a conscience choice to reject the Church. They honestly do believe that they are following the commands of Jesus.

Protestants are joined to the Church though their Trinitarian baptisms. After all that is the doorway into the Church. While they are not in full communion with the Church, they are still members of the Church.

God desires that we ALL be saved. Therefore he is willing to work with us were we are at. God’s Justices would not allow someone to be condemned simply because of a heresy that they inherited though no fault of their own. That is not justice. This is why he will judge us based on our own personal actions.

Are you mad or something and wish to go to an “easier” Church if you can be saved anyhow? You can’t be serious. I believe the thinking is that they can be saved “in spite” of being-non Catholic. There is a chance.

If you are happy to think that protestants (or others) are damned simply for the fact that they are not Catholic then you don’t really “get” your own religion at all.

You know, people used to believe that the world was flat and the sun circled it. They were wrong. The truth was something quite different. In spite of the fact they did not understand the principle of gravity they were not flung off the earth.

God knows our hearts and He doesn’t need our puny judgements to define who will or will not be saved. Our job is to show forth God’s love. God’s job is to make the judgement as to whether or not we show forth that truth in love and mercy.

Pope Pius IX, in *“On the Church in Austria (Singulari Quidam);” *
*It must, of course, be held as a matter of faith that outside the apostolic Roman Church no one can be saved, that the Church is the only ark of salvation, and that whoever does not enter it will perish in the flood. **On the other hand, it must likewise be held as certain that those who are affected by ignorance of the true religion, if it is invincible ignorance, are not subject to any guilt in this matter before the eyes of the Lord (***no. 7).

The invincibly ignorant would not include those who think that all religions are the same. That would be indifference. Jesus said, “I am the way” (John 14:6), not a way. The person who is *invincibly ignorant *honestly believes, though erroneously, that he is going the right way.

You seem to be taking the position that all who are not members of the Catholic Church are automatically dammed-that is not Church teaching. This rigorist position which was taken by Fr. Feeney (that all must be actual members of the Catholic Church to be saved) has been condemned by the Magisterium.

I love it when some who actually knows what they are talking about adds real doctrine to a discussion.
Thank you.

We have to remember God created black-holes, super novae, exploding stars. He is not a soft warm fuzzy. We must not take for granted either is mercy or his judgements.

Indeed we declare, say, pronounce, and define that it is altogether necessary to salvation for every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.

~Pope Boniface VIII, Papal Bull Unam Sanctam, 1302 AD

The most Holy Catholic Church frimly believes, professes, and preaches that none of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics, can have a share in eternal life; but that they will go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless before death they are joined with Her; and that so important is the unity of this ecclesiastical body that only those remaining within this unity can receive an eternal recompence for their fasts, their almsgivings, their other works of Christian piety and the duties of a Christian soldier. No one, let his almsgiving be as great as it may, no one, even if he pour out his blood for the name of Christ, can be saved, unless he remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church.

~Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, 1438-1445, from the Papal Bull Cantate Domino, 1441 AD.

Some may argue that these are not infallible statements but they sure are clothed in the language of ex cathedra declarations.

Ha ha delicious irony

“…Protestants dont follow God’s Church and so are damned…”

“…you think that protestants are damned, so therefore you are damned!”

But really, fellow Catholics, what the op is trying to say albeit in a round about way is that if Protestantism as a whole brings people to heaven apart from what we claim is the “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church,” then we can no longer claim that we are the Church Christ founded.

It is a problem to be pondered, though as someone said earlier, maybe most protestants will be making a long layover in purgatory.

The issue is one of culpability. Those who know and walk are damned. Those who do not know through no fault of their own (big words) have hope. Those who know but have other issues may or may not be in trouble.

What did Pope Eugene IV mean, then when he issued: “Cantate Domino,” 1441,

“The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that all those who are outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans but also Jews or heretics and schismatics, cannot share in eternal life and will go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless they are joined to the Church before the end of their lives; that the unity of this ecclesiastical body is of such importance that only for those who abide in it do the Church’s sacraments contribute to salvation and do fasts, almsgiving and other works of piety and practices of the Christian militia productive of eternal rewards; and that nobody can be saved, no matter how much he has given away in alms and even if he has shed blood in the name of Christ, unless he has persevered in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.”

And what did Pope Boniface mean:
Indeed we declare, say, pronounce, and define that it is altogether necessary to salvation for every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.

~Pope Boniface VIII, Papal Bull Unam Sanctam, 1302 AD

You are truly in darkness. You have let your own arrogance and pride in your church cloud your charity, love, and hope for others. You are hoping for someone to be damned and that can only demonstrate a lack of Christ in your life. Any Christian wants to see the salvation of all mankind. Do you seriously think Jesus had your attitude? You’d fit in perfectly with the Pharisees and Sadducees who thought they were so secure, superior, and took pleasure from the downfall and punishment of others. You need to take stock of yourself spiritually. If this is what you’ve gotten out of Catholicism, a sick, superior, high and mighty security where you feel so safe in condemning others, you better watch out for your own salvation!

I like the story of the man born blind-from-birth that Jesus gave both physical and spiritual sight to.
The Pharisees cast him out of the organized church that they were sure was the only way to God. They had their traditions, temple worship, and biblical knowledge to back their position.
The healed man sure had no problem putting that conceited bunch in their place as they questioned him in a hostile manner. A simple man got kicked out of the “church” as if a heathen and publican, but he really got kicked into the true church with the Lord Jesus as the Head.
So much for the “condemnation” by the conceited bunch of men with tradition.
