Has anyone read any early writings or commentary about how the Jewish people reacted to the tearing of the temple curtain?

I think we don’t have any sources for what the Jewish people thought of it.

There is no historical verification that this happened except for Matthew. Of course, we don’t have most of anything written from that era either. Josephus never mentions it…and I think he would have. My opinion is that it’s a symbolic part of the story. It’s such a momentous occurrence that we would expect mention somewhere…even years later. YMMV

Not just Matthew.

Holy Bible (Douay Rheims)
Lk 23:45 • ‘And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.’

Does Josephus or Pliny etc cover it? There is certainly quite a bit of commentary on its meaning.
How early are you speaking?

St. Jerome mentioned that the Gospel of the Nazarenes (Hebrew Matthew?) describes a huge lintel of the temple being broken and divided in two.

Josephus mentions something similar happening but rather because of Titus years later.
