hello everyone,
has anyone ever cried unexpectedly when in confession?,i did today when i mentioned a prayer request from the priest for a terminally ill relative. It brought back sad memories of my late wife who had the same condition (cancer),the priest(not my usual one) was so kind and understanding he made me feel so much better.it was the first time it had ever happened to me but it did me a power of good,i felt a bit embarrassed but i need not have worried, i will never forget his kindness, may God Bless him always.best wishes to you all, mick.

I’m so sorry about your relative Mick :console: and I can understand the tears, my goodness you lost your wife 😦 God Bless this priest and the kindness he showed you. It’s heart warming to hear stories like this.

I haven’t cried yet but I know many on here have shared stories of tears in confession for various different reasons. 🙂

Done that! More than once! Quite often! Most of the times!

You are not alone. I cried at my last two confessions. (Advent & Lent) It is a humbling, sorrowful, freeing, wonderful process. I have to believe everyone who experiences it is moved emotionally. On top of it, you are still raw and in pain. God bless you, your wife in heaven, and this wonderful & loving priest.

When I did a general confession last year I cried so hard that I had to take a few minutes to calm down.

The priest, Father Wolfgang said the most wonderful thing that calmed me down. He said, “Your sins are forgiven, why are you still crying?”

Them kind words were the most wonderful I had EVER heard a priest say to me. At that VERY moment I was able to let my past sins really go.

It was a general confession, it had been sins I had confessed before, even though I knew they were forgiven, I had always had guilt for them. Until the confession I had with Father Wolfgang.

He just recently did mass on ETWN on April 6th, you can catch the mass here…

Mick, sorry to hear of your grief and your loss. God bless you and give you comfort.

It has happened to me only once (so far? 😉 ). And it was just recently, actually. I was given the grace to confess something very difficult, and my voice broke as I was confessing… and I started to cry.

The priest who heard my confession, spoke to me in a very compassionate and understanding voice. He told me that my confession had taken courage. And that GAVE me courage… to know that Our Lord has truly forgiven me. And that He loves me!

Even though I cried during that confession… I was so happy… I could have done cartwheels all the way to my car. Isn’t God GOOD! 🙂

Me too. I had a particularly hard sin to confess recently, and I broke down as I told the priest about it. He said that was the Holy Spirit, and he spoke to me with such kindness and love and then absolved me. I went out with a tearful smile on my face! I know what you mean about wanting to do cartwheels!

Blessings,

I think it is perfectly natural to cry under the circumstances. I have also experienced the gift of tears during moments of conversion.

Most of the confessionals around here have boxes of Kleenex prominenty situated - so it would seem to be not uncommon for people to cry in confession!
