For a Catholic the ability to withstand temptations is to pray, receive the Sacraments, and stay away from the near occasions of sin.
It is good to have friends who are supportive and disciplined. There will be times when a person who desires to obey the Lord and live a chaste life that others will ridicule him/her.
Ephesians 6:10…Ponder those verses that tell us about the armor of God!
If someone falls they can pray and repent. Jesus makes all things new! We need to depend on Him for everything.
Much media today is speaking the wrong thing. Not all, but much of it. Media can make good look evil, and evil look good.
True happiness and peace comes from obeying the Lord.

I’ll assume you’re a teenager. What you’ll need to do is pray a lot, recieve the Sacraments, keep good friends, and, perhaps most importantly, keep a clean heart and clean mind. If you want to stay abstinent bad enough, you will.
In my experience, the best way to make yourself want purity is to read about the lives of the Saints.
Now suppose there was a forest fire. How do you avoid getting burned? You don’t just need to stay away from it, you need to stay upwind of it. You obviously want to avoid situations that are an immediate threat to your purity (wild parties, etc,) and you also want to avoid things that could lead to them.
Continuing the fire analogy, in my opinion, having romantic relationships in high school (or anytime you aren’t seeking marriage), is a bad idea. I graduated high school last year. I purposely avoided having a girlfriend, and I’m glad I did. It might sound extreme, but think about it: By having a romantic relationship in high school, there is a very small chance of the relationship lasting, but it could be a grave threat to your integrity and to your soul. A simple cost-benefit analysis shows its best not to date before you’re seeking marriage.

Assuming you are a teen, let me say I get why this might be an issue for you. The sexualization of young people is one of the most disgusting parts of modern culture, and I am not at exaggerating when I say that I believe that the devil himself is behind this trend. What it really comes down to is character and self-esteem- if you respect yourself, know that God put you in charge of yourself, and are strong enough to resist the pressures of the idiots, you will be fine.
Therefore, pray and find friends with similar values, and remember that the ones who have sex are not the brave and daring rebels. No- they are the conformists, who let themselves be dictated to by TV, the Internet and their peers. And in the end, they end up diseased, in the abortion clinic, getting passed around like a joint, never knowing the joy of giving your entire self to just one special person, or in some other manner disappointed or second best. Trust me- you are better than that and deserve more than that, and so do your friends.

While I agree with the rest of your statement, you are misinformed here. Why does there always have to be a modern-culture jab here? The sexualization of the young is a phenomenon that has stretched across history, heck especially considering that life expectancy now was waaaaay shorter back then. Catholicism during Europe’s Dark Ages even approved an Age of Consent that would shock most people here.

I would say the difference is in the nature of technology and consumerism- the sheer scale of technology and media-enabled sexualization is a new factor. I guess another difference is the medical angle, which seems to offer consequence-free sex ( though as we know there is rarely such a thing as consequence-free sex).
But I definitely agree that sexualization is as old as sex itself.

I would argue that the population renders this moot. If we were to measure the rate of exposure to population via the technology of the day, you will find it no more out of proportion than it is today. Don’t forget, even the Hebrews were pretty sexual (Songs is pretty sensual while Jacob’s love story runs a plot that’s not far off from those Japanese adult visual novels). You can only imagine how worse it was when a greater majority of the global population back then was pagan.
Fast forward to today. Have things really changed? I don’t think our Faith, for all its numbers, has ever remedied the corrupt view of sexuality that we’ve had since the Fall. That doesn’t mean we should quit because a never-ending stalemate is better than a loss of for us. We may have human fallibility holding us back but that’s why we do everything to keep moving forward.
No there isn’t but then again, the attitudes of those who valued using concubines and practiced polygamy didn’t have healthy attitudes towards procreation either.
Not just that. Sexualization of the young. And yeah, it does make us pretty stupid and shallow at times (including myself
).

Very good post. Along with TV, internet and peers is popular music. Extremely explicit today, aimed at the young and encouraging them into activities that are truly against God’s teachings and harmful to them.
