I prefer to be realistic. Sorry if that rains on your happy parade. But looking only at one aspect of the situation does not tell the entire story, and leads people into a false sense of security that the status quo is acceptable or working, when in reality it’s not even close.

Don’t worry Liza. I don’t let people rain on my “happy parade”. 😉

And for the record, The Astros will have a terrible year. Go Pirates! (But Roy Oswalt is a great pitcher)

Sheesh, I remember in my High School our “sex Ed” in the mid-early 90’s consisted of 1 in 3 have some sort of STD. Condoms won’t fully protect against many of them and they don’t always work and sometimes they break. All other contraceptives help to prevent pregnancy but not 100% and don’t protect at all against diseases.

It was basically a stay a virgin, and find a virgin to marry so you don’t get a disease type of class.

It sure worked for me!!!and boy am I greatful ! 😃

what ever happened to the scarred straight method???🤷

That is an interesting study.

I would like to mention a few things about it. First of all, the 2 groups involved were abstinence only and something that didn’t promote abstinence at all. From my knowledge, the sex ed programs at schools now are a mix of both abstinence and safe sex (with an emphasis on abstinence). I might be wrong about that, but I believe that is how they are. So, it isn’t just comparing abstinence only to what we have now, it is comparing abstinence only to another extreme.

Also, I would like to point out that there is definitely an incentive to lie about having sex if you are in the abstinence only group. Think about a 14 year old girl that was taught she shouldn’t be having sex for two years, but did anyway. Then think about what she is going to put on a survey about it…there is a good chance she will lie and say she didn’t have sex. This wouldn’t be the same in the group that heard only safe sex, because they were not told they shouldn’t be having sex at all, so why lie about it?

So, in my opinion, the study is probably not that accurate. I am SURE that there are far more qualified people that have looked at the study and made similar judgments about it. This is just basic statistics.
It was a peer reviewed study in one of the most prestigoius medical journals there is-but of course if it disgrees with your opinion it must be wrong

Well based on last night and the first 6 innings tonight you could be right

You suggest abstinence only studies are flawed because of the morning after pill (MAP) is available, yet offer no evidence to support that.

If the MAP was the cause then we should have seen similar drops in teen pregnancies among both groups of teens-those who receive abstinence only edcuation and those who receive “comprehensive” sex edxuation. In fact it the MAP were the cause of the drop we should have seen a greater drop in pregnancies among those reveicving comprehensive sex edcuation since they are given more info on contraception-yet just the opposite is true. The greatest drop in pregancies was among those receiving abstinence only instruction. Why is this? Could it be that when you tell chidren that they can have sex without consequaences as long as they take a pill the next day they are more likely to have sex?
Nobody is telling kids that at this forum. Kids are kids and don’t think consequences apply to them. Why not give them a realistic talk about the realities of sex in their life. How it can diminish their personhood and lead to some diseases that may affect their ability to have children. You are naive to think think that just so no works. You haven’t ben around high schoolers in a while. I’m sorry but it is true.

I just said that it was a flawed study. Flawed studies get peer reviewed all the time.

It works every time it is tried. Guess I have more connfidece in our youth than you do. It has been my experience whe you tesch them the truth most of them listen. When you tell them they are nohting nore than animals who can not control their urges they respond in kind. BTW- I spent many years couneling teens and teaching absitinence when i worked in a CPC . we had great sucesss. How about you?

This is definitely true. Look at the MMR paper by Andrew Wakefield, and there’s countless others. Sometimes papers are published by a journal simply to ignite debate (thinking about their impact factor).

If we’re going to go ahead and use anecdotal evidence: I’m 18, and in middle-school we received abstinence-only education. They have, largely, not been abstinent. Sure, most of them signed the “Virginity Pledge” cards - and they laughed about it afterward. Teenagers do that.
