Teen faces suspension over rosary beads

Since school was letting out, I’m assuming it was around 3:00 p.m. Maybe he was getting ready to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet? (don’t laugh, I"m giving the kid the benefit of the doubt. We have some very devout teens here on the CA forums, so it’s not unheard of). I’d be pretty ticked, too, if someone in a position of authority basically told me I couldn’t pray. He could have tucked it back in and let it go, but, heck, teenagers can be tempestuous. I think he was ultimately within his rights, since the school has no written rule, and doesn’t (according to the Mom) have a gang problem

How would you know that 99% of people who wear rosaries are not wearing them to remind them to pray? Have you taken a survey, or is this just your own opinionated self speaking? I wear them, and needless to say, I am not a gang member!

If this is the case, it’s just another school system run amuck - regarding freedom of Religion of individuals.
The US Constitution merely states that the US Goverment shall not establish a religion.

However a Rosary is a sacramental, and must be treated with respect. Just because it looks “cool” is not a reason to wear it. But this is separate from the school issue.

Ave Maria! God Bless this young man for bearing witness. Shame to the principal and the school for taking such a drastic action. I would like to see them suspend a Muslim for wearing a Berka! This is just another sign of the times that we live in. As America gets more secularized and bow down to the Baal of the Humanists, more wil turn away from God. People have left sound teaching and have fallen for falsehoods which their ears itch for. Let us pray for all those involved.

Of course he got suspended, I mean, the rosary is a powerful weapon! Hahaha!

But on the real side, I guess this is weird saying this, but I have a really big problem with people who are not catholic, or non practicing catholics wearing rosaries. This may seem kind of extreme, but I say that the school should do some sort of background check and if the person is Catholic then he should be allowed to wear it because it is just a simple excercise of faith/religion,(that is if they really care that much to begin with, If they really think its a concern then let them waste there time on these background checks")

For example, can somebody tell a muslim that they cannot wear the hijab just because some gangs use that as a symbol? Of course not.

The facts of the case make a difference.
Was Jason given a chance to put away the rosary, or merely punished without a chance?
If he was told to put it away, did he comply?
The school has an “unwritten policy”. Were the students ever told of this policy? Because if he didn’t know there was a rule, how could he be expected to obey it?

Have other students at any time been punished for wearing rosaries?

It just my opinion. I doubt that there is any magisterial teaching on the matter.

Still, the rosary is in essence a prayer aid, not an apparel item.

It doesn’t particularly bother me if someone wants to wear a rosary around their neck. But this is a school. Schools (and employers for that matter) are entitled to have their own rules and their own dress codes.

So there was a disagreement. The student was asked–twice–by a teacher, to tuck the rosary back in. He did not. Students don’t get to do whatever they want in a school. There would have been opportunity to dispute the matter, by the student or by the parent, without simply defying the teacher.

I have heard that in some places gang members may use rosaries as symbols of their group. I don’t know if that is true or not. If it is true, I’d certainly want to ban the wearing of them on campus. In any case, the school is entitled to its own rules.

Agreed. Gangs are a REAL problem for school systems, and some gangs are very much using them (exploiting) as a means of violent identification.

Sorry. Im on the school’s side on this, especially if this young man was given the option to wear it under his clothing as an alternative.

Im not a fan of having the rosary used as some sort of gang affiliation, which it clearly is these days.
