I also refuse to embrace the gradual decline of appropriate dress for men and women, and teens. My God. Do you have to wear a blouse where a good portion of your breasts are visible? Why? I got one answer: “But all my friends dress like this!” With a little anger thrown in.

Modesty for teens is more than about clothing. Poise, confidence, and teaching teens how to “carry themselves,” in a dignified way, in public. Women get the worst of it from a small group of dictators called ‘fashion designers.’ I’ve been watching it going downhill for decades. Finally, if you’re Catholic, you need to be aware of the toxic effects of the world around you.

When a Pope teaches about immodesty and gives guidelines like Pope Pius XI an Pope Pius XII did, we have the official teaching of the Church. The traditional teaching (found in these two Popes) has been somewhat disregarded by the current dress code of St. Peter’s Basilica. I shall not ignore traditional teachings for the sake of modesty and for the sake of my precious soul. God bless you.

Why is it okay for breastfeeding moms to show their breasts partially or even fully, but a low cut top on somebody else, who is showing far less, inappropriate?

Yes, but this is a dress code for the Vatican (and by the way, is less restrictive that what was proposed upthread – it does not require skirts nor sleeves to the elbow). It is not presuming to be a dress code for daily life.
It should be for going to Church. And women should not wear pants that look like they were painted on. This lack of sensitivity to the messages people send by wearing certain kinds of clothing is terrible. Why a guy would wear a shirt in public that reads: “Official beer drinking shirt” and worse, is beyond me. Catholics, at least, better get this straight.

More restrictive is better than less restrictive.

But we weren’t talking about what to wear to church — we were talking about clothing to wear in general. And the Church acknowledges that modesty standards vary from culture to culture. In your example, I think the “Official Beer Drinking Shirt” is tacky – but it’s not immodest nor (for me) particularly offensive.

We are not talking about what to wear to church.

Don’t change the subject. There is also no requirement that tells us to dress like we are living in first century Palestine.

Not all pants look like they are painted on. There is no requirement that Catholic women only wear dresses. Even the Vatican does not require that.

The clothing too many people wear today is terrible. Bottom line. I’d rather follow Catholic teaching than what the world puts on the racks, which is fashionable for about two weeks. It’s very sad to see standards in general decline over the years. Human decency is one of the foundations of Human Dignity. Nuns in Africa dress just like nuns in the US. Do you think missionaries encouraged women in other cultures to go topless?

This a critical issue that can’t be treated like it’s nothing. Catholics, at least, better get it together. Personal opinions are not facts or consistent with Church teaching.

Catholics had better disregard the “not for me” comments and dress with dignity.

But you’re not talking about following Catholic teaching – you’re talking about your personal preference. Which is, of course, fine for you. As long as you don’t try to present your preference as definitive Church teaching.

Some people - not you - don’t want to hear anything from the Church about this.

I think he makes good points – particularly about the interior quality of modesty – but my point is that he does not actually lay out specific standards. For example, he does not say modesty requires elbow length sleeves or necklines that are no lower than two inches below the collar bone.

And also, if these standards were to be adopted, they need to be across the board. Not just for women. I’ve noticed that we don’t often hear a hue and cry for men to refrain from mowing the lawn without shirts, or to keep their elbows and knees covered.

Butaperson:
OP, darling, dress how YOU feel is modest. I wish you all the luck.

This statement can be a bit problematic. We need general guidelines to help our fellow brothers and sisters not to be tempted into impurity. God bless.

Modesty starts in the heart. If one is not humble, it would be boring for him/her to be modest in dress. Modesty is the virtue that protects the dignity of the human person. Focus on that aspect. If a certain type of clothing turns you into an object for pleasure, then do not wear it. You can still be and look very beautiful and be modest at the same time.👍 God bless you.

Impurity starts in the heart/mind. Impurity of the heart – determines how we look/approach our neighbor – turns another human being into an object. An impure heart will look an another as an object. The further we get from God – reject his purifying Grace – the more one will be tempted – and become blinded to seeing Christ in our neighbor.

I’m not a teen but being in my 20s I’ve also had the same dilemma… I ended up eventually replacing many things because they were too tight or short to be modest. I usually wear maxi skirts in the summer. For the heat I’ve found the type of fabric makes a big difference - cotton or linen is much better. If its still hot we can just offer it up in reparation for immodesty.

For me its about not wanting to provide temptation to others but also about wanting to dress like a daughter of Our Lady… When shopping I like the idea of asking, what Mary would think of the clothing and what she would approve. My standards became more strict for myself over time but it gives me more peace and I don’t regret it at all. 🙂

I follow St Padre Pio’s guidelines for dress which are long skirts, sleeves etc, (this is what i felt drawn to over time) but he also told men to cover up too 🙂

Just a heads up, this thread and post are over six months old. These folks may not be reading here any longer.
