im a new member in this forum, …

now im 14 yrs.old and i have a desire to be a religious sister,…and i hope that this forum will help me to discern more about my vocation…

honestly, my parents don’t like the idea of becoming a religious sister…and i am not still sure if they will allow me to enter a convent when i graduated highschool…i am only a second year highschool student…2 years more…

i started to realized my vocation during my retreat last year, suddenly the idea of becoming a nun came in my mind…it is in the month of august…then, after that, i still dont give enough time for that, i dont mind it…but when the month of september came, something strange happened to me…and again the idea of becoming a nun came again in my mind. i am really confused at that point so i started to search different things about religious vocation. and as time goes by, my desire to serve the Lord as a religious, is more strong…

i already talk to some priest, nuns, seminarians and Lay persons. and one thing they say is to focus first in my studies. but they are happy to know that i have that desire…

pls. pray for me…

Hi! Maligayang pagdating sa Catholic Answers Forums!

I am so glad to see a Filipino here. anyway, the CAF would be very happy to help you. Have you started discerning? What do you want to be? A nun who wants to go outside tot each, or to take care of orphans, or a cloistered nun, those who do not go out of their convents to pray for all? There’s a confusion among Filipinos about the terms mongha and madre. Mongha refers to those who don;t go outside, and Madre refers to those who teach, etc.

By the way I am a Filipino, just turned 17 last February 16. I am from Lipa City, Batangas. For 11 years I was in Malabon City.

It is great to hear that the Lord is giving you this desire to follow him. Certainly keep to your studies - and look at them as one of the ways you can offer yourself to him; in sacrificing yourself for your work. It’s wonderful to hear about God’s calling people to be with him. I’ll keep you in my prayers.

JeselleBautista, I just want you to make sure that you do not disrespect your parents on this matter. It’s wonderful that you want to become a religious sister(👍), but don’t assume that this is God’s will for you just because it sounds good. I will pray that God make’s His will clear for you.:signofcross:

On the contrary, “sounding good” is one of the signs of a vocation. Of course, over time it’ll have to be confirmed by other religious and finally by the Church herself.

Indeed, do focus on your studies. However, cherish this desire. Enkindle it with prayer and devotion to Our Lord.

I think that it’s a mistake that people brush off such desires at such tender age. I dare say that it’s one of the reasons that contribute to the vocational crisis, because God does call some of His children to serve Him and His Church in a special way. It’s His children who are failing to answer His calling.

Besides, God does call people at any age, for instance St. Therese, and if such desires are smothered as childish or extemporaneous, an impressionable teenager may be tempted to dismiss it as a fling of the age and not carry it forth as one matures.

It may be a true vocation, but only time will tell. In the meantime, treat it as a treasure from the Lord, whether you become a religious when you come of age or not.

I’m still semi-confused over what I want to do. I’m still a Freshman, and I feel drawn to being a nun like I mentioned in an earlier post, but I don’t know how to tell my parents. Or when for that matter. Does anyone know if a lot of people get a degree first and then join a convent?

I don’t know about a lot of people, but I know my sister feels quite drawn to the religious life, though at the moment she’s just finished three or four years of biochemistry at home, and moved to Ontario to study theology. I’m not sure how far she plans to take her studies in theology, but after she’s done, I think she wants to study medicine. (🤷 I know, it’s like she can’t get enough of school  Not that I blame her. I feel the same way.) Sometime in there, or afterwards, she may join an order. I don’t know.

Thank you for the correction, Augustine. I hadn’t thought of it that way.:doh2: I guess to most teens it does sound pretty boring. Thanks again!:tiphat:

I know a lot of the time it depends on what order you want to join. Some orders won’t let you join until you have a bachelors but some will take you right out of high school. It can also depend on how ready you feel to join.

Thanks for the advice! I don’t know what order I want to join, but I’ve still got 3 years of high school. I’m focusing on that for now.

Hey there! 🙂

Right now, I’m a junior in high school, and as far as vocations go, it’s all up in the air right now. I am leaving all my options open, and trying to open myself up to God and what he really wants me to do.

I kind of have a fear of commitment, so please pray that I’ll accept whatever God chooses and that I will “know”. Because that’s my greatest fear…that I will go the wrong way…

I think if I were to look for an order, I would want a missionary one, because I love traveling, and I want to incorporate that into whatever I do. Of course, it is God’s choice after all. lol

Don’t know what everyone’s looking for, but I have one order that I “have connections” with. If you would like an order that is centered around prayer and is more a monastic, comtemplative lifestyle, look at my signature and click the link. My aunt is the vocation director in Clyde, Missouri, and it really is a beautiful place. 😃

Okay, I’m done “recruiting”. lol 😉
