Even with two recent feature films and an ongoing animated series on Nickelodeon, is it safe to say that Ninja Turtle fever isn’t where it was in the early '90s?
 
Nothing is where it was in the early 90’s, except maybe my net worth…
 
It would be strange indeed if the franchise maintained the same level of interest. That’s almost a generation, after all!

Well, my little grandson would say Ninja Turtles are right up at the top of his list. Same as it was 8 years ago for my older grandson. I didn’t have grandchildren in the 90’s so… the little one still loves anything Ninja Turtle.

Maybe there’s just so many more interests out there…
 
I still have some of the first editions of the original comics and wouldn’t trade 'em for the world. They weren’t all warm and fuzzy like they became once they went kiddie cartoon.

Splinter’s line in the first movie was as close as it gets.

It may not be here it was but it’s pretty close.
 
I can’t speak for the kids of today but they were “cool” back when I was a kid and that was just the times. Maybe it’s seen as old now and it’s the grown up kids from the 80’s taking their kids to see it now (probably more for themselves rather than for the kids!)
 
They are still cool, but just one of many popular superhero or cartoon characters. Their major advantage for kids is their array of Japanese weapons. It is a gateway to interest in Japanese culture, too.

Like the coollege-age checkout guy said to the little kid being falsely instructed by an adult about his new Leonardo costume for Halloween, “That’s not a katana. It’s a ninjatou.”

Indeed, there is a big difference,

Ninja to means ninja sword and looks like this. very utilitarian and not at all the soul of the ninja.

Whereas the katana is considered "the soul of the Samurai and is very elegant and carefully crafted. It is also a long sword whereas the ninja blades tended to be somewhat shorter and closer in length to the Wakizashi(scroll down to illustration)
