I don’t need to be huzzahing and jumping pews and screaming Christian rock lyrics at Mass to know that I’ve been endowed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially counsel and understanding.

I think her point is that while it does happen, it isn’t always REAL and we have to look at the FRUITS. Even when the Church investigates miracle cures, apparitions, etc, they have to make sure they weren’t caused by something natural.

She has a right to judge what happened to her daughter. Even if she wasn’t there, she knows her daughter and her daughter’s spirituality. If something happened that doesn’t seem to match up, she’s going to be skeptical.

I got very emotional at a prayer service one night and felt the same symptoms. Reason? I just got back from the Papal Mass earlier, which I had to get up at 4 AM for, and I was so excited the night before that I didn’t sleep much, and I hadn’t eaten much that whole day. I’ve also felt the Spirit move in other prayer services, for reasons that could only be God.

As for being discerning over spiritual practices, it’s a good thing. There are leaders who know how to whip people into a frenzy, which is frightening and a cause to be vigilant. Also, it isn’t for everyone. You don’t need to speak in tongues to be a good Catholic. What worked for the Apostles doesn’t work for everyone. Some people are drawn to Charismatic services, others to more contemplative.

Very true! However the louder manifestations sure make for a fun time for some of us. Since God did not create us all alike, there are going to be different levels of involvement, participation and celebration.

I am not familiar with Pew Jumping but I have seen liturgical dancing and I have seen some powerful praising at a heavy metal/rap/reggae concert - put on by P.O.D. (Payable On Death). There was even a Christian Mosh Pit.
