One night this week I couldn’t sleep and the night quickly turned into early morning. I was watching EWTN, and at 3:30 am they did a live broadcast of the Pope’s weekly audience. My question is, may the Papal blessing extended to those in the audience and their family members back home and the blessing of Rosaries, etc. be gained for yourself and your Rosary by watching on TV?

not sure, good question. i’d like to think so, but that is up to someone who is more knowledgeable about such things than i.

For the people watching, yes: according to the Enchiridion Indulgentiarum of 1986; the fourth (& current) edition, that of 1999, is unlikely to be different. A plenary indulgence may be gained, on the usual conditions.

Not for rosaries, though - these need to be in some sort of contact with the person giving the blessing - TV is too remote; unless the object being blessed is in front of the person blessing it, one might be offering anything at all to be blessed.

If you want a Rosary blessed, I *think *any priest has faculties to do so. Dominicans certainly do.

I hope that helps 🙂 ##

Although I always try to have my Rosaries blessed by a Priest, this summer I had a Rosary blessed by a Roman Catholic Deacon (in Birmingham England). The Deacon was extremely thorough in blessing the rosary – both in prayer and in actually using Holy Water to bless it. When objects are blessed, they should be sprinkled with Holy Water (and I typically do this myself after a Priest blesses a sacramental for me). But the kind Deacon actually was so thorough that there was nothing remaining to be done (but to start using it).

In my brief experience, any time a Priest has blessed a rosary or metal for me (after Mass or at some similar place), they briefly pray over the object but do not use Holy Water.

And with the items I routinely use and carry, I re-dunk them in Holy Water perhaps once or twice a year.

The Papal blessing extends to those watching on TV and hearing on Radio, I suppose on the Net now too. I do not believe the Blessing of objects is possible via the media only persons may receive the Papal blessing.
